A friend just emailed me, mentioning that he's out of town, staying at a Marriott. I instantly responded, with a comment that Marriott is now "porn-free" (as far as I understand it). It was literally the first word that sprang to my mind - Marriott - porn.

Wow. How would you like to be a supposedly religious family and have your name entwined with the business of porn to that extent? And that's with me, who isn't knowledgeable about porn or its outlets. (Of course, it's been a frequent topic at RfM, which is where I get a lot of info about the day-to-day world of Mormonism).

How do they reconcile that with being Mormon ("Christian"), I wonder. Rhetorical question really - I know the explanation is something about having to keep shareholders and guests happy (?).

What do you think of when you see/hear the Marriott name?

First: Porn

Second: Fire-proof garments

Third: Why does so much money wind up in the hands of idiots?

Isn't that hotels that has a Book of Mormon instead of or in addition to the Bible in the drawers?

The super-cute guy I knew at BYU who was a Marriott - we were great friends but I could never convince him we should move it up to the next level. Sigh.

Was this in the late 80s/early 90s and did he used to be a gymnast, by any chance?

No - this was the mid 80s 85-86. He was still there when I graduated in 1986 and I lost touch with him.

at DT. I was surprised he was there with us common folk. This dude had loads of clothes (stacks and stacks of those multi-colored "hammer time" sweaters that we wore in the 80's), and the babes he had visiting him on visitor Sunday...wow. CA girl you must be a hottttt to have dated a Marriot.

Coffee machines in each room, and a Book of Mormon next to the Bible in the drawer.

The Marriotts were in my stake as a kid. My parents went to some kind of function at their house and came away clucking their tongues over the gold plated bathroom fixtures. So needlessly showy, so unlike humble followers of the Lord, blah blah blah.

I hate staying there.

After "Gah! Does it have to be the Marriott?" I think of Hulk Hogan and Randy Macho Man Savage. I saw the former clubbing at the one in downtown SLC in 1983 and the latter being rowdy with his entourage by the pool at a Marriott in Phoenix in 1986.

After that, probably porn.

1. Porn
2. Mormon
3. Book of Mormon in the bedside drawer
4. Well-run hotel chain

Somehow I think that this order of associations is not what their marketing department has in mind.

I think of an Ice Cube song, circa 19-naughty-8, called "We Be Clubbin'"

Now everybody in the world love to go clubbin'
And after the club it's either breakfast or f##kin'
Hope we ain't duckin'...from haters in the parking lot
Who ain't got nothin'... tryin' to prove sumthin
Frontin'... we be the niggas who be bluntin'
On the way to the Mariott, keep'em very hot...
West Side hits the hairy spot...ALL NIGHT LOOONG...
Get your club on

He was my stake president when I was a kid in the late 1970s. He was very corporate executive looking. He took me into his home office with my Dad, and he asked me the usual temple recommend questions they ask kids. Then he gave me some advice about telling the truth and keeping a journal. He pointed to the wall behind him where there were rows of day planner boxes where he had kept a journal every day of his adult life. I was pretty impressed by that.

Then I saw him on TV twenty years later talking about how he was saved from a fire by his underwear.

that is where my boyfriend always stayed when he worked 3 weeks a month in California and I'd go stay with him every other month for a week--so all good memories to do with Marriott.

He also used to read from the BofM to me on the phone as a joke.

Time shares and very nice resorts. In spite of their mormon-ness, they run outstanding facilities.

I work at the Marriott Library at the University of Utah, so that's the first thing I think of. The dance building on the U campus is also named after the Marriotts.

I like the book of mormons in the drawer. I write links for this site and other exmo sites throughout the book while watching TV.

And Marriot = porn.

Aren't a lot of the h/motels franchise-owned?

I guess most of the policies are set in the franchise agreement (as are MOST covered in those agreements)...

The first thing that comes to my mind is that I cashed in my V card in a Marriott hotel room. It was a really nice room too.

First thing I think of is the Marriott School of business and Marriott Center from BYU. Afterwards, I think of my mission president who married into their family and is a high up VP with Marriott Corp. Alas no discounts when I stay there.

I read his biography many years ago. He started with a small root beer stand. It grew from that small root beer stand to A & W restaurants. Then he started providing meals on airplanes. Then came the hotels that he is better known for today. The biggest thing I got out of his biography was his ability to overcome obstacles in his businesses.
