When Mormons say that Columbus was just a man of his time, they ignore the Book of Mormon teachings of God's involvement in the events. The colonization of the Americas was canonized in the Book of Mormon. It teaches that Europeans were in a superior position because God was on their side and American Indians were doomed to be driven, scattered and nearly destroyed because their wickedness brought God's wrath on themselves. It is a racist teaching.

In reality, it was the Papal Bulls that are known as the "Christian Doctrine of Discovery" that made that time what it was. Some of that became part of United States law and still impacts American Indians today. The Pope recently said that wrongs were done. Mormonism can't do that because of its keystone scripture. And just last year an LDS apostle said that Catholics don't know who God is.

Mormons: Oh yeah! Well our Jesus was conceived because Elohim left his wife, Heavenly Mother, to complete a mission to Earth where he met Mary and filled her with the Holy Sp--er Spirit.

And after Jesus rose from the dead He flew across the ocean to the Americans (we're still trying to figure out where; stay tuned and keep those coins and dollar bills coming) and He told those people what a bad ass He was, and one of these days He was going to come back and kick some Lamanite butt because of what they'd done to the white-and-delightsome Nephites.

Whoops, make that "pure-and-delightsome"; those 19th century translating devices were a bit fickle.
