"Christmas is approaching: there will be lights, parties, Christmas trees and nativity scenes… it's all a charade. The world continues to go to war. The world has not chosen a peaceful path," Pope Francis said during a sermon on Thursday.

I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

You do realise that the website is operated by the Russian government and was created by Mr Putin?

Pretty sure that Putin, and most Russians, while not RC, are also Christians (Orthodox).

I don't believe Putin needs to put words in Poop Francis' mouth.

Oops, I meant Pope. :P

Pope Francis is perfectly capable of expressing himself, and he meant what he said.

Take that, you second guessers!

I also agree with his sentiment, sadly.

Not much Christmas cheer this yuletide season, too much gloom and doom going on in the world.

Plus, unless I adopt a family, I don't have anyone to shop like crazy for between now and Christmas. What fun is that?!

I may adopt a family between now and Christmas, just so I can.

Any volunteers? ;)

There have always been wars in the world. Religion is often the cause of them, one group trying to force their beliefs on the other guy.

So the Pope sitting on the vast riches of the Vatican and with a 2000 year history of his religious organization trying to force his views on everyone else, usually by military means, needs to just STFU.

Let people who choose to, enjoy the season. It is really the pagan solstice celebration with Jesus glued onto it. But I still love it.

You *can* actually adopt a family (in need) for Christmas. Both of you will get a lot out of the experience.

As for Christmas cheer, one of the noblest tributes ever is Parisians still pursuing their joie de vivre. There has to still be Christmas. Or at least the Miracle on 34th Street.

And candy canes.

And snow.

And new books.

And cute little kids too young yet to be cynical.

Maybe a kitten or three.

And somebody, somewhere, you love.

This is so true. I have sort of adopted a family I met on another social network over the past couple of years. It's a young mother and father with three little children. She lost her own mother when her mom was only 44.

They live in Georgia. Sweet family.

Of course there's always need right in our own neighborhood.

Donation drives each and every year. So this may be the one I get in on.

The one child I do shop for doesn't want anything, really. After sending a birthday care package off recently, that was a combination b-day and Christmas combined.

Once you do adopt a family to provide Christmas (presents) for, LDS Inc would like to provide their CCC luxury mall for you to shop in

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf-_vxsog4A

or, IF that is too much trouble then you could just directly give all of the money you were going to spend to THE (MORmON) Church who will happily keep most of it in MORmON Jesus's name, put out some token amount to charity to preserve their tax exempt status and provide the world with a wonderful MORmON Christmas message including a concert by the MORmON tabernacle choir that is really another advertisement for their (disgusting) church (scam).

You were planning on spending a hefty bundle of money, were not you ?

James Faust gave a conference talk where he talked about having family on both sides of battle lines someplace in Germany at one time. It might have been the perfect build up to decry the horrors of war as a some one who has the title of apostle might be inclined to do. But Faust is a MORmON ASSpostHOLE and one the stupidest people to ever live, so his conclusion was that people are duty bound to do what their government tells them to BECAUSE OBEDIENCE (to authority figures) TRUMPS EVERYTHING ELSE, including apparently the desire to avoid shooting your own family members with a high powered rifle as a leader dictates doing so, or cutting off the head of a dissenter as MORmON Jesus dictates.
It was a stroke of pure MORmON genius for some one who was a MORmON ASSpostHOLE.
One good thing about, IF a Faust did manage to shoot another Faust then at least there would be one less Faust in the world. I will see if I can find the link for the talk.

When our Mom died and we cleaned out the house, we took over the linen, towels, blankets, etc. to a homeless shelter.

You will never be thanked as much or shown as much appreciation than you'll get from the people that operate those places. They deal with people when the suffering are at their lowest and feel there is no chance to rise up.

That's like Jesus saying Herod shouldn't kill babies.

Duh.

I always think that maybe these truisms sound better in a sermon than they look in writing where they can seem So. Darn. Obvious.

That's like MORmONISM saying that families should be together after MORmONISM has done SO MUCH to destroy families, members of families and to generally fan the flames of hatred and contempt in order to further benefit their own corporate Profit motive.

Christmas can be a time to relax, care abut others, give gifts, ponder the classic themes of hope and renewal...

But that isn't political enough for the current "pope." If a single person gets left out, he want to punish everyone else. I'm inclined to wonder how much hating he does himself. Certainly the world has gotten more violent since he started his incessant scolding.

There's always Hannukah.

A little Menorah here, some Menorah there.

A latke and a dreidel, and a sleighbell. (for good measure.)

Yeah, a nice Jesusy Jesuit, the first pope ever to belong to the Society of Jesus in fact.

Maybe that's no big deal but there are those who think it is:

Pope f is such a buzzkill. Back off dude and let people find pleasure in celebrating the Christmas season. I suspect my ancestors have been finding pleasure in the winter solstice since before the time of Jesus. Instead of nagging others, why not hock the treasure of the Vatican and go do some good in the world. But that would not feel half as self congratulatory as lecturing others about their shortcomings.

Focus on the mote in your own eye and leave the rest of us alone!

(in Japan) there was the chronicle of the Third Reich filled with German home movies of the era. Among them, even at the height of the war, there were homey Christmas celebrations. Talk about charades! Maybe it was a delusion then, as people could protest that they didn't know what was going on in their own backyards, but our global media make it pretty difficult for us to remain ignorant.

Especially since the Christmas message is 'peace on earth and goodwill to men,' getting drunk on eggnog and wallowing in presents while shutting out of mind those in need, is really "obtuse" (to quote the Shawshank Redemption). Call it Solstice or Saturnalia, then, but not "Christ-mas."

And don't expect the head of the largest branch of Christendom to excuse the absence of Christ from the season.
