Yesterday the phone rang.

Me: Hello?
TBM: Richard?
Me: Yes...
TBM: Richard, I've been looking at your website, and there is an item I want you to remove.
Me: Oh? Why should I do that?
TBM: Because it's slanderous.
Me: And which item is that?
TBM: Oh, you'd like me to tell you, wouldn't you! But I'm not going to.
Me: Then how am I supposed to know which one to take down?
TBM: Just go through them all, and you'll see.
Me: And what if I don't do that?
TBM: Then I'll bring charges against you!
Me: Ok, you just go ahead and do that. (I hung up).

The caller was male, sounded like about 25, very firm voice, probably an RM.

I punched *69 and got his phone number, and looked it up on the Internet. It's a Salt Lake City number, no name. The Internet page asked if I wanted to report the call. So I did, listing it as a "prank" call containing a threat.

I'm not waiting for the court summons.

I wonder if anyone follows up on prank calls?

How childish of the TBM RM to pull this childish stunt.

"TBM: Because it's slanderous."

Maybe the first thing this TBM should do is learn the difference between "slander" and "libel."

And then maybe he should study up on the first amendment.

Not to mention that "truth is a defense" to both libel & slander.

Also, it's hard to believe that he was serious, because when they're serious they address you as Brother Richard, or Brother Packham, so Holy McGhost knows they mean it...

"Not to mention that 'truth is a defense' to both libel & slander."

And not to mention that he didn't even specify what particular statement constituted "slander."

I'm sure that that TBM called didn't realize that Richard "Big Daddy" Packham is a retired lawyer.

It's libelous and slanderous: it's slibelous.

What's the website link?

We can all guess and comment on what TBM found "slanderous".

First of all, if it's written vs. spoken, it's libelous, not slanderous. Secondly, the defense to defamation is the truth. Someone cannot bring suit against you just because they don't like your opinions or don't like you speaking the truth or letting other people in on it, even if it disparages someone else. I'd imagine that you weren't keeping sweet in some comment about a G.A. or something.

One of my siblings, who is not the sharpest knife in the drawer by any stretch of the imagination, used to tell me she was going to have my bishop from my teen years file a "slander" suit against me because I have several times here written about what a pervert he was in my bishop's interviews. I laughed and told her I couldn't wait.

It would be so fun. The jurisdiction would not be Utah. It would be here in the Southeast, where the "crime" occurred. It would be so neat to get that kind of publicity about what happens in Mormon bishops' offices. But unfortunately, it would never come to fruition because it would be dropped and I'd sue him for a frivolous lawsuit since I have never mentioned his name, so there was not libel and my defense would be the truth. Since there was only him and I in the office, I could solicit "witnesses" who experienced the same thing so prove it is not only commonplace, but that TSCC encourages it.

Never heard anything more about my big lawsuit. Dang. She ruined all my fun.

Libel is a published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation; a written defamation.

So unless you are attacking him personally with false information, he is a total dumb ass. So if you are attacking him, you will know who it is :)

I doubt you are personally attacking him.

No - I'm in the Internet white pages, and also my phone # is listed on this site's "helpers" list, where my contact information is listed.

Remember that TBMs are taught to not ever say anything negative against their leaders/church, even if it's true.

I think that would be against the board rules for me to post it here.

I wonder which version of the First Vision he found to be "slanderous".
We'll probably never know.

Oh wow. A wanna-be gangsta-wiener.

Badge of Honor to be worthy of a desperate call as this.
