Wow...he did some amazing work, with writing bits that were often awe-inspiring (at least to me).

As his new journey unfolds, I wish him well.

That Humberto Eco has died is fact.

Whether he continues to exist in some way or not is a question of belief--Tevai's belief that he does and your belief that he doesn't.

Both are simply beliefs. Neither is provable. Neither is more valid than the other.

Actually, one is more probable than the other, based on observable facts. Maintaining one belief requires a lot more effort than the other. In fact, one is a belief, the other is the most logical conclusion a rational person can come to based on the available information.

Also one is a cliched platititude trotted out as a false consolation the other is a statement of fact. But which is which?

I'll tell you one thing: that one scene from The Name of the Rose movie will live on in my mind for eternity. When I tell you I was 15 when I saw that movie, you'll know which scene I mean. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge...

Indeed, Valentina Vargas can be my Valentine any time of year!

More probable to you maybe. Other people feel differently and no one knows.

My brother and I heard him read a few years ago. I've read 5 or 6 of his books, including of course The Name of the Rose.

His books are not always easy reads, but they are always worth it.

I really enjoyed his book "Focault's Pendulum" which mentions Mormonism, describing it as a branch of Freemasonry. RIP

Looking back, I think Foucault's Pendulum was my first clue to the pointlessness of the temple rituals. As an adolescent, I was very much caught up in the pseudo-intellectual world of esoteric mumbo-jumbo so the ending of that novel hit me like a ton of bricks. It took me years to figure out what it meant (nothing, duh).

Eco describes the LDS Cult rather as a fondly cultivated Son of Freemasonry.

Does that mighty pendulum still swing there in the the middle of BYU?

I've really enjoyed his work.

I just started reading his book Numero Zero a couple days ago.

Never read the book but loved the movie. Very dark.

The only book of his I read was "The Name Of the Rose" and I really enjoyed it. I think I might read some of his other books as well.

If you do, I'd suggest Foucault's Pendulum next. A good read!

Loved the book esp. as I
am a Sherlock Holmes fan and William
of Baskerville was a Medieval version.
