In an article about Warren Jeffs

http://news.yahoo.com/prison-plays-hide-seek-ex-polygamist-sect-leader-152039941.html

the AP describes him as:

"...the self-styled prophet of the breakaway Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints..."

Why don't news outlets describe Tommy "wiggle-ears" Monson the same way?

If I remember correctly, the news people usually describe Monson, Hinckley, et.al, as "president" or "leader" of the Mormon church. I think they should use the same terminology as used for the other cults, such as "self-styled" or "so-called" prophet.
