That is weird.

I might be able to sign a release allowing my apartment complex to post pictures of me online, but I certainly can't give them permission to post pictures of OTHER people (my visitors) online.

That's idiotic. It doesn't sound like they consulted with a lawyer before making up their rules.

Using someone's photo for commercial purposes requires that person's permission.

I can walk up to you as you're standing in your front yard, take yout photo and then post it on FB and you have no remedy. But if I put that same photo in an ad about my roofing company and imply you're so happy with your new roof, then you can go after me.

But surely giving permission can't be a requirement for renting an apartment, can it?

short of 'civil rights', a landlord can do almost anything that s/he requires.

There used to be nudist apartment house (complex?) in / near Las Vegas... Does that help U understand?

I am not an attorney, but I'm pretty sure the answer to this is:

It CAN be a requirement...UNTIL such a requirement is prohibited by law.

Since this doesn't fall under civil rights issues (race...gender...religion...etc.), it would be up to each state/[or] county/[or] municipality to pass a law specifically prohibiting this kind of requirement to rent.

I would be in favor of such a law---I, personally, strongly think that this kind of mandatory "commercial" requirement infringes on each citizen's inherent right to privacy...a right which exists unless this right is relinquished in some way (by becoming a legally-defined "public person" for example).

I wonder if it's owned by a former BYU Honor Code Gestapo commandant?

They want people to like them on Facebook, so they do something to make tenants dislike them (more). Yeah, makes perfect sense.

"Hey, 'like' me or I'll kill you!"

Interesting set of tensions, que no?

You mean Crackhouse Central?

I kid you not...

I dropped off two of the city's oldest and most shopworn ladies-of-the-evening there last night, honest...

One of 'em managed to get on housing, and two others moved in with her...

Probably a Steinbeck story in there somewhere.

Okay, I don't want to move in a rush, so I hit the required "Like" button, see attachment, but here's what I think of your requirement to invade my FB with free advertising for you. Everyone, feel free to share. Oh, and by the time my lease has expired, I will have obtained a new one elsewhere."

Hey, I thought slavery was outlawed!

They should offer a discount for doing their bidding.

Students desperate for housing will sign almost anything! The only reason they have the FB requirement "Friend" is so they can check on what they say on FB. Get nasty, and bingo, you get a 30 day notice!

I'm wondering if it's a marketing strategy, so that the complex has access to the residents' friends list. It also makes the FB page look popular.

Nope. I'm sure it's to spy on the tenants and know what they are saying about the complex, their job, and naughty pictures to use against them. This is UT and these are likely Mormon landlords. It's always about being a tattletale!

I lived in a place where the landlord demanded an email account to send the monthly newsletter and billing.

I told him I was not paying a large sum of money just to have internet for their convenience.

They used it for the so called 24 hour notice for repairs and maintenance.

After being turned away several times for failure to notify me. They finally started to leave writtrn notice. Saw a few others as well.

Just before I moved out they announced that all notices and announcements would be on facebook.
