In the past one and half years my TBM BIL has been healed several times via the magical powers of olive oil and prayer. He has had hip replacement, cancer, heart attack and now he has Parkinson's.

Every illness he gets a blessing and will be healed if it is gods will. I donot believe the magical olive oil will cure him of Parkinson's. Do you?

Parkinson's is one of the diseases which is delayed by drinking coffee. Better than olive oil.

If the hair on one's head is dry, a few drops of olive oil might help.

Other than that, no--it doesn't work, other than to reinforce obedience to priesthood patriarchy.

If I had hit the trifecta of bad luck like your BIL has, I might be grasping at straws too.

Actually, the problems may not be separate but related. The cause of a heart problem I had was sugar. I was hypoglycemic and the heart specialist identified the problem with the pre-diabetic condition. The hip condition may be unrelated if caused by an injury or related if the effect of the underlying sugar problem resulting in a bone condition due to loss of calcium. That coffee not only helps regulate the body reducing the likelihood of diabetes but also can at least delay Parkinsons. IOW, the WoW may be the problem.

Just read some studies are Parkinson's. Some studies have found that heavy coffee drinking may reduce the disease by up to 80%, Further, some new studies indicate that it can reduce symptoms even in those already with Parkinson's. Throw out the oil (or consume it) and start drinking coffee! Tell the bishop that the WoW is bunk.

No - can I say absolutely no again!? Priesthood blessings are worthless/very damaging to the victim because the inflicted looses precious time fighting a potential killer! If you are a moron who has a serious illness, you can always pacify all the CULT indoctrinated fanatics around you/get your meaningless, absolutely ridiculous jo smith jr. blessing but, and this is critical - the next step should be a competent medical professional with access to the tools necessary to keep your quality of life bearable while hoping 21st century medicine can prevail against a vicious/potentially fatal intruder in your life!

As we have seen so many times before, mormonism is a killer in so many ways! Priesthood blessings are an especially egregious faith mechanism with no credibility in the real world that are sure to hurt/kill you if you don't pursue a competent, medical remedy! Ludicrous blessings given for common viruses such as an upset stomach/cold won't likely kill you but serious conditions require a tangible, real time remedy!

Unfortunately for victimized morons, the 15 presiding criminals/ charlatans all, send innocent, believing, young girls/boys right out of High School to their deaths every year all over the world when they no full well that the so-called church is a vicious, money grubbing fraud! Yup, no doubt, the sweet, grandfatherly, old men guarding the Corporate Sole Ledgers are creeps/hardened criminals who won't think twice about your demise! mormons - wise up! As Always, tnurg (GRUNT)

Yeah good luck to your BIL with that one. My ultra-TBM FIL has struggled with Parkinson's since I met my old man, 20+ years ago. Back then he had a hand tremor. Now he has full-on Lewy Body Dementia and sometimes gets startled by his reflection in the mirror, believing it to be an intruder.

I guarantee you this man has been blessed and prayed over by hundreds of people and the bombardment goes on daily. Heck, I used to pray for him every day, when I believed there was something or someone to pray to. Yet the disease marches on. The doctors have actually recommended coffee and other antioxidants, but of course he didn't listen. MIL buys him pomegranate juice when they can afford it, but since they blew their retirement and sold their house and tithed the proceeds before going on a useless mission to the east coast, they can't afford much. According to one of my SILs who is a nurse, the Parkinson's meds he takes are outdated by better, more effective ones but MIL says the new ones make FIL "contentious" so she prefers the old ones.

He wanders off, now, almost every chance he gets, Good thing he is very slow and can hardly walk. You can't hold a conversation with him, he will struggle with words, then blank out, staring into space. He's incontinent and tremors so badly he has to hold on to the table to just sit for dinner. Again, this is with 5 uber TBM sons blessing him constantly, with DILS who pray and fast.

Your BIL, if he doesn't take up to date meds and some high grade antioxidants will find prayer and salad oil to be rather flimsy deterrents to a heavy hitter like Parkinson's.

Edited numerous times for spelling.

Well, I DO believe it works. Through the power of positive thinking. If the person being "blessed" honestly and truly believes in magic olive oil, it really can give them the resolve to push through and help in their own healing.

Otherwise, it at least gives comfort to those who are close to them. If they have had a P'hood blessing and don't recover, then it was obviously God's will. I just hate it when something seemingly miraculous healing happens after someone has had one and it's all chalked up to mormon magic. Like seeming miraculous things don't happen every single day to people all over the world. Including Atheists and Wiccans and Muslims.

Also there is nothing "magical" about a hip replacement. Thank the surgeon and the company that created the device not magic oil; hip replacement today has a very high success rate.

Sounds like the poor guy should do whatever he can with all that illness. If oil and words make him feel better - good for him.

Benefit is solely to LD$, Inc..... it keeps his tithing money rolling in, until he dies.

I can recall an Olive Oil Blessing I assisted in, and the blesser prayed that the oil would penetrate the fibers of the blessed's body, locate the illness, and heal it. I imagined the oil seeping into his body and "knowing" exactly where to go, to actually remove the bad cells.

I'm not sure I believed it would work then, and I definitely don't believe it now.

If we must ascribe a miracle to healing & wellness, it should be Western medicine.

I was scanning down the list and my mind read "healed via Olive Oil and capers"

and I thought "finally somebody's making some sense"

Just the thought of blessing oil, well, it's just silly plain & simple.

Personally, I'm waiting for the day when olive oil and prayers are able to grow back somebody's severed limb.

The placebo effect of a priesthood blessing is and arguably efficacious. The magical oil and "power of God" have nothing to do with it.

used consecrated oil as a sexual lubricant? You know, if you were in a bind? A little Celestial KY? Would it make the experience more spiritual? Is she cried out, "Oh God!" would it be an exclamation of sexual pleasure or just a prayer?

The only thing olive oil ever healed in my home was a squeaky hinge...

Speaking of squeaky hinges, my husband just fixed the back door on my Honda CRV that would no longer shut, using a liberal spray of WD-40. It was a MIRACLE! Works great now. The LDS Church should ditch all that old fashioned bottled oil and start using WD-40!

Best wishes to your tbm relative. My father suffered from Parkinson's for about 19 years, until his death at 79.

Anything's possible but Parkinson's results when those neurons - responsible for dopamine production - die in a section of the brain called the Substantia Nigra. Nerve cells/neurons can regenerate, but usually don't.

I'm not a physician, but was involved in medical research. If your physician has indicated something contrary to what I've said here, his word/advice/knowledge should prevail.

On a slightly different note I used coconut oil to relieve a sunburn today on a whim it did help. However there is evidence based on science with coconut oil. The cult hasn't got that on blessed olive oil.

It doesn't matter what we believe, it matters what he believes. I wouldn't try to talk him out of it. It would be better if Mormon prayers didn't work, but you gotta let Stan have his fun.

The only priesthood blessing which kinda worked were those where I gave blessings to those dying, giving assurance most like those of Last Rites in the Catholic Church. With my uncle, I could see his reponse on the monitors although he was comatose. I released him from this earthly life.
