Checkout the comments on the Trib article about the Book of Mormon musical leading Tony nominations. I comment there a lot, but the system's not working for me now, and I can't log into the Trib (Disqus) or anything.

Here's the link:
http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/entertainment/51740601-81/bookofmormon-southpark-matt-trey.html.csp

I like things like:
"In a couple of years no one will remember this musical, but the Book of Mormon will continue to quietly change lives forever for the better."

This idiot is dillusional. It hurts me to be unable to tell him so right now. Then this other person says:
"...it sounds funny and great. Mormonism is becoming more mainstream, and with that comes being targets sometimes..."

I get the feeling that the person is saying the statement as a question, like, "Mormonism is becoming more mainstream, right?"
I'd like to be able to respond and say, "Mainstream. Right. Kolob. Polygamy. Corrupted Masonic rites. Magical underwear. Why, it just screams, 'MAINSTREAM!', don't it?"

Help me out.

The musical will grow and tour, coast to coast just like Lion King and The Producers. It won't fade. Like "The Fantasticks," high schools will be performing it alternating with Oklahoma. It's too late. It's too good. Yes, dear TBM's, hope it will fade, but it won't.

But, no worries. The heart of this musical is about humanity and god and beliefs. It's not a blanket condemnation of Mormonism, it surpasses that with insightfulness.

Matt and Trey don't hate Mormons. They really don't. The theme is the human condition, so Morg members don't have anything to fear about condemnation, well, if they could think about terms beyond a limited world view.

The upshot is that next Halloween, a lot of people will be dressing like missionaries. That's gonna be real interesting from a PR point of view. What will they do? Change the uniform or be in costume for posterity? Hummmmm

I am not sure they do. They seem to think Mormonism is quaint and quite cute.

I don't.

That's exactly the impression I got. In All About Mormons, they seemed to completely misunderstand the religion. I don't think they understand what it does to people. Look at Utah! Highest rate of paid pornography, highest rate of money scams, highest rate of anti-depressents, higher rates of suicide than the rest of America! Look at what its done to people's lives, bankrupting families, to Gay rights, women's rights and teaching everyone who has normal sexual urges that they're worthless!

No, Matt and Trey don't know a damn thing about that church.

And that bullshit spouted in the episode that "Mormonism teaches loving your family" is a blatant lie. The temple wedding and believing you won't see your non-mormon family in Heaven is proof enough.

How would you interpret the environment where you grew up using an outside viewpoint? It is being NeverMo living in the Moridor with mormons (in Colorado) They showed Joe shoving his head in a hat, golden plates, etc.. Check out the movie Orgazmo. Nobody had to explain their point of view. I'm sure there will be a lot of discussion about this "anti" production.

It no longer matters if anyone considers the Morg to be quaint or cute, as long as there is the internet and intelligent contributors being open, a Broadway production won't make much of a difference. The cat's outside of the bag now. If anything, it will draw even more curiosity into the curiosity which is the mormon Cult. Oh, yeah. Big Love showed temple ceremonies. There is no more "Sacred but Secret." It's all public and rather amusing. Not amusing. A freakshow. Magic Underwear? Really?
