Am I just misremembering things, or was there a prostitution ring at BYU? I don't mean the old tennis-racquet-in-the-window thing. I'm thinking of students working as full-on "escorts."

And today it's easy to freelance via the Internet.

Until I see a mugshot and arrest report I will never believe thoses BYU hooker stories.

Those stories have been circulating for at least 30 years now. It's another Mormon urban legend.

And it says quite a bit about Mormons themselves I think. They're obsessed with sex yet will never actually admit it.

BYU's sports mascots are the "Cougars," which for some calls to mind those relentless, stealthy predators of the desert.

For others, "Cougars" signifies those relentless, stealthy predators of the shopping mall and town square, using icy homemade lemonade and augmented bosoms to lure in missionaries or other strapping young men.

"BYU Hookers" connotes an intriguing amalgamation: the Mrs. Robinson of "The Graduate" picking up a few bucks (double entendre intended) on the side.

(tongue firmly in cheek)
I saw an ad for BYU hookers on the 'net when I lived in Provo.
Trouble is, they were all white girls with huge hair who charged extra for doing it with garments on.
So I passed.

I don't think there ever was a BYU prostitution ring but I know it does (or did) exist in the Utah Valley underground.

I was approached when I was 16 (i'm male) to see if I would be interested in making $100 a time. It was explained to me that it would be with older women.

In other words, with Cougars...

..and I never made the connection!

Of course this was the 70's. Was the term even coined then?

Maybe not:

However, "The Graduate" did come out in 1967...:)

How much did you make?

Most likely, but not a ring.

Today's high-class prostitution happens primarily via websites like Seeking Arrangement. You won't see a mug shot because there are no arrests. It's too difficult to prove in court that sex was the primary commodity exchanged and not a sugar daddy wanting to help girl buy text books. Contrast that to the street prostitute who not only needs to worry about her pimp shaking her down but the cops as well.

As with all vice laws, it's the poor that suffer while the wealthy face little repercussions.

I never saw any evidence of it, but I never lived on campus.

I don't know about BYU, but maybe Ricks.

I remember in the mid 80s, the daughter of one of my mom's friends was involved.

My mom spent time on the phone with this friend late into the night for weeks on end. I was curious as to why my mom was talking to this friend so much and my mom told me what was going on. I don't remember many details, but the friend's daughter was involved in prostitution along with some her roommates. She was somehow discovered and was expelled from school.

An excellent name for a girl punk band.

An even better name for a guy punk band.

It certainly sounds like the stuff urban legends are made of.

BTW, what's all this about tennis rackets in windows?? (I do know that here in the UK a washing powder used to be on the market, going by the name of OMO; it was apparently common practice for 'bored housewives' *cough* to place a packet in the front window to signal, for example, to the window cleaner etc O(ld) M(an) O(ut) ).

There's possibly a band name in there, but wouldn't it be nice if someone could get a film out of this. There was (is, probably) a film by the name 'Holywood Chainsaw Hookers', tagline: they cost you an arm and a leg.

Wouldn't it be marvellous to have a film along the lines of "BYU Tithing Hookers", tagline: they cost you a good ten percent. :-)

Back in 1980 a friend of mine dated Jim McMahan, the famous BYU and NFL quarterback. She said there were a bunch of football "groupies" that hung around the team. Most of them didn't go to BYU but they apparently loved going to hang out with the players who partied. Not hookers, but willing to "play ball."

Yeah, I would agree that there are many YBU coed's who were willing to "play ball" when I was there. I dated a RS president in the student ward that I was in who loved to play around on Saturday night, but then would give the most wonderful spiritually special testiphony the very next morning. It didn't bother her or me either. Good times.

I dunno about paid hookers... but all it takes is one look at the Provo Craigslist personals to see there's plenty of action taking place "discreetly" on or around BYU Campus.

Surprised there aren't more "sting" operations done by the Honor Code office on there.

I received a phone message in May: "Hi this is Josh from Craig's list. Want to party?"

I'm not sure whom Josh is and, NO, I do not want to party!

In REXBURG, '60s, one of the off-campus women's apartments had an unofficial name change from 'Queen's Row' to Studs Row.

I'm pretty sure that my dorm mom, Estella Shail (widow of town pharmacist) verified there was a prostitution scandal there.

The Carriage House was known as Miscarriage House during the 80's - fun fact.

More than a few young lasses never made it back for Spring semester after Winter break. My blood pressure still jumps 10 points everytime someone knocks on the front door.

Damned Internet.

I think anyone who doesn't think that a $ for sex exchange Could happen with a group of eager, horny, & sexually repressed (LDS) teens & early 20's people ... is Off the rails.

I went to graduate school at BYU with a woman who was a sex worker in SLC. Pretty high end she made quite a bit of money. I also had a roommate who was A male escort. Again he did quite well for her myself. Paid for school and his expenses. He once got paid with a very expensive coin collection.
