It's almost like Kirby is daring them to ex him. They're afraid because he has the power of the pen. But, if he was a regular schmo, he'd be bounced by now. I'm glad that he keeps poking them.
He talks about being a deacon 52 years ago, so he's in his mid-sixties. He's obviously caring less and less about what any of his Mormon audience thinks of him. I'm guessing in his last column he'll completely finish off the cult and maybe even publicly resign.
As he couches his opinions in sarcasm and humor, along with the fact that he is somewhat of a public figure in Utah, Kirby is safe from the inquisitor's mighty backhand of Mormon spiritual justice.
Hilarious, as usual! He makes the point while getting a laugh out of the Mormons. He's on safe ground. He's not poking the bear, well, only to get a laugh!
I think that if he worked for any other Utah newspaper, he would have been fired a long time ago. I do agree that his leaders and those in the COB are afraid of what he'd write if they actually excommunicated them, so they let him get away with things that peons wouldn't. Anyone else advocating for women's equality or admitting they performed a same sex marriage would be excommunicated.

the notion of ordaining girls to be deacons would take a whole transformation in doctrine for mormons and catholics. The whole reason girls are unworthy, as far as I remember, was that they are under the curse of Eve and that curse is to bow their heads and say "yes" to their man. All because Eve ate the fruit first.
The whole fall of Adam and Eve story would have to undergo a major transformation and rewriting before they could have equal rights.
