Maybe it's like a game of Monopoly when you advance to the other side.
When you land in the Terrestrial Kingdom all it takes is a "Get out of Jail free card," and next thing you know you advance to Boardwalk, and voila! You are now King of Atlantic City aka Celestial Kingdom.
With some careful planning, it can happen until someone else comes along and steals your Boardwalk. Then back to Square One all over again.
The Book of Mormon a la Monopoly. Maybe Joseph was a visionary after all. Mormonism, like Monopoly, is like a game of chance, illusion and big racket w/winner takes all.
Yeah, 'tis true, 'tis true, When it's as made up as The Three Little Pigs and Peter Pan, it is tres difficile to keep a cohesive, make-sense narrative of it all (or even half of it).
However, something screams out that ole sleazy Joey or Briggy didn't loose a ton of sleep worrying much about this as they were too busy thinking if they preferred a blonde or a redhead tomorrow night.

They have all kinds of themed Monopoly games. Maybe they should come out with a Mormon version!! instead of houses and hotels, they could have stakes/temples! The "chance/community chest" cards could be interesting, especially if they took suggestions from this board ;) They would be hilarious!

"What happens to people who die before having had a chance to hear the gospel?"
Well if it's Joseph Smith's brother Alvin, then it's automatic entry to Celestial Glory as that's why Smith wrote D&C 137. He must have been answering those members who enquired of Joseph Smith's oldest brother Alvin dying before Smith got his religion going. Apparently Alvin would have received it all had he not died so young (age 25).
D&C 137:7 Thus came the voice of the Lord unto me, saying: All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God;
> D&C 137:7 Thus came the voice of the Lord unto me, > saying: All who have died without a knowledge of > this gospel, WHO WOULD HAVE RECEIVED IT IF they > had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the > celestial kingdom of God; (emphasis added)
so whether or not someone WOULD have done something is already decided before they do it. So much for "agency."
There was a young man who said "Damn! I perceive with regret that I am But a creature that moves In predestinate grooves I'm not even a bus, I'm a tram."
IF the D&C verses are right, the mormon church has some explaining to do.
Let's start with the Adam God business that Briggy was so fond of.
Also, what has happened to Prophet, Seer, and Revelator? There has never been one in my lifetime despite the fact that the mormon church claims to have anywhere from one to 15 of them.
"We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see."
I think a case could be made that JS was starting either go off the deep end or upping the ante in his con/delusion, because he'd had so many people buy into it already: if God was once a man, then Joseph Smith, as leader of the "saints", was nearly there, and you'd better start treating him like a god.
