It's from the Gary & Shannon Show on KFI. She was pulling his chain when he brought up the 50th anniversary news. She asked him, "Spock was the Wookie, right, and then there was Luke and Lela and Bones..."
I got into Star Trek when they started showing the reruns of the original series on TV. Something interesting is that I happen to know the couple who started the letter writing campaign to get the original series back on the air after it was cancelled.
March 1, 1968. Riding my bike around the neighborhood, I decided to take a "jump," and crashed -- breaking my arm. Pretty badly (compound fracture). Neighbor kids ran to get my mom, who nearly fainted when she saw my arm, but managed to hold it together and drive me to the hospital. Surgery was required. As they were taking me into surgery, I asked my mom to tell the doctor just one thing: be sure and be done by 8:30 PM, so I could watch Star Trek. It was then about 5:30 PM.
I was out and in my room (had to stay overnight) by 8:10PM. Only had a local, so I was awake. Lots of pain, though. I still managed to stay alert enough to watch Star Trek, and remember it so clearly because it was when I broke my arm, and because at the end of that episode, NBC announced on-air that Star Trek was being renewed for another year. :)
So, yeah, I've been a Trekkie-geek for 50 years. Live long and propser, indeed!
I had a major crush on Grace Lee Whitney who played Yeoman Janice Rand RIP. Her woven beehive hairdo and smoking hot bod were good for a few excellent self loving sessions in my dorm room after the broadcasts on Thursday night.
