So, fantasy is as exciting to your brain as a positive reality so long as you haven't educated yourself to know the difference? I didn't need a study to figure that out.

Finding that nineteen (small number there) DEVOUT young Mormons had their brains stimulated by giving them the Mormon "treats" they have been conditioned to love their whole lives just seems like Pavlov's Dogs all over again.

Now, why don't we scan some cat brains while giving them catnip?

Are they just as short/ long and just as good?
Mormon's prayers suck! Lack depth, creativity.

I've never had moron sex and moron prayers were just as useless.

Those fMRI machines look too small for two people to have sex in.

But just as good as sex? What kind of sex are Mormons having?

Mormon prayer is mental masturbation.

Based on mormon conditioning, sex is dirty, prayer is clean. Prayer "feels" better than sex....no guilt from enjoying your prayer too much. Simple as that.

Wow, the moron leadershit are trying to patch the holes! Figure out what makes people stay, or leave. Let me give them a clue: Mormonism. Next thing you know the apostaholes and the man-in-charge [of the keys] (the jailer Monson) will outlaw sex (if they haven't already) and institute prayer in it's place. Wait. Never mind.

Sex doesn't feel good to morons because they know not what they do or why they do it... this is the same reason prayer [meditation, though few mormons know what this means, how it feels or what to do with it] feels good to them. It's wrote, habbit, "SAFE", familiar.

Yeah, do they even know what real hubba hubba sex *is*?

I mean, my brother actually told me he and his wife prayed before doin' it. What a turn off.

Or for mormons, maybe a turn on.

But back to my original question, would they even know what a real sexual turn on is?

Lol...bwhahaha...now it all makes sense. The prayer thang before sex was started (perhaps) by Russ Nelson's wife, who declared this in a conference talk to the relief society(?). Anyway she stated that she and Russy pray to invite the spirit in with them. A threesome of sorts, and apparently Russ is okay with that b/c the Holy Ghost is a man.

the prayer has to be done in the missionary position for it to work.

If it's mormon missionaries, the position is seated on the toilet, penis in hand...:)

Reading the actual published report shows this reporter is putting a lot of extra comparisons in that were not even measured in the study.

The study did not check the brain response of the measured group for sex.

The published report also shows a higher brain activity from the short church video clips than either prayer or scripture study (using the scripture mastery scriptures so they were well known).

My conclusion from the study - better to Netflix and chill.

I disagree, sex is better by far and has no "thees" and "Thous" though it sometimes has an "amen".....

The only relation ship between prayer and sex that I can see is, both deeds allows you to think deeply and fantasize, If you do it right you get all wet, but in the end you can only cuddle with the one.

OK, I understand how this could be done for scripture reading and general spiritual experiences. But the results compared the brain activity with that which occurs during sex. Here's what I want to know:

How would one go about measuring brain activity during sex? This study used functional MRI (fMRI), which means that you need to put the subject inside an extremely strong magnetic field.

How would one do that for sex??? I don't see how it would be possible to fit two people into the tight space of an MRI machine. Then there's the issue of ensuring the the subject(s) hold very still during the measurement. And aren't distracted by the loud thumping sounds of the gradient coils.

If the scientists are extrapolating their results from porn or masturbation studies, I am going to be very disappointed.

Read "Bonk" by Mary Roach. In it, she explains how she and her husband volunteered for just such an MRI, and did indeed manage to fit in the machine, and did indeed manage to "hold still" at all the right times. :)

But anyway...most of the "brain light up" MRI tests regarding sex are done with subjects viewing sexual images, fantasizing about sex, or masturbating. 'Cause the actual deed does present recording problems.

Thank you for the details. I'm glad that there exist scientists with sufficient integrity to do the actual experiment and not be satisfied by some insipid simulation.

That s the field I'm hopefully going into. :) I was trying to wrack my brain where I read about the research, and IICHTK mentioned it, a book that he suggested to me I read about about a year ago. I also recommend reading it! It's a fun and informative read.

With the advent of new technology, we're learning more and more about our sexual selves and the brain. For instance, with the help of an MRI, researchers finally understood that the clitoris is not just a glans, but can actually extend up to six inches in the corpus which explains so, SO, much about female sexual pleasure and why it's so varied from woman to woman.

As a nevermo, I can't imagine a prayer that would be so powerful that your partner would have to scrape you off the ceiling with a putty knife, as sometimes happens with sex....however, I have heard it said that in some of those kind of weird evangelical Christian churches where they speak in tongues and do other things that we consider bizarre, that the "spirit" can "come upon" someone so strongly that they appear to--uh, well, how might I put this delicately? Let's say that after "spirit possession happening," with the associated "speaking in tongues" and twitching and thrashing around and shaking uncontrollably, the pastor might have to scrape that person off the ceiling of the church with a putty knife. So....? Would it be worth it to join that church? Not for me, since I know the best way to have the "putty knife" experience, and trust me, that ain't it. LOL!

With or without the use of a psychotropic. I believe these people that their prayers can feel as good as intercourse to people like this...After all, quantifying pain is difficult across the boards because everyone is different, so rating levels of pleasure would fall under the same kind of consideration.

That being said, I now have a new section for my anthro paper comparing the ritual use of hallucinogens to more acceptable forms of ritual. Also, I wonder if I can show this to my Stats prof for extra credit. :D

What do you expect? The study took place in Utah. And we all know how objective Utahns are about the subject of their religion. Now, they're trying to convince the world that Mormonism is as good as sex. Of course, all you have to do is to join the church and believe hard enough (pun intended), to achieve such a state. For all of us who prayed to find out if the Book of Mormon is true and got zonked, we all know how that's going to end up for them. Twenty years and a hundred thousand dollars in tithing later, they'll realize what they gave up a real sex life for.... a life of voluntary slavery and no sex.

The original article:

http://unews.utah.edu/this-is-your-brain-on-god/

"Religious and spiritual experiences activate the brain reward circuits in much the same way as love, sex, gambling, drugs and music, report researchers at the University of Utah School of Medicine. The findings will be published Nov. 29 in the journal Social Neuroscience."

I'm glad that prayer is finally being medically identified as a pleasure-seeking behavior.

"In one experiment, participants pushed a button when they felt a peak spiritual feeling while watching church-produced stimuli."

That's a very old shade of gray.

So basically, "the spirit" is really just your brain reacting in the same way it does to pleasure to other activities. Makes sense.
