Does BYU employ someone to schedule actions to embarrass BYU on a regular basis? Seems like every 2 weeks, BYU makes the national news for something stupid, sexist or backward. (or all 3).
What a bunch of Morons.

Maybe the university should open a satellite campus in Saudi Arabia...or Afghanistan....

Shoulder jihad. Maybe the prof felt guilty about the boner he got from seeing bare shoulders.

My how times have changed.

Back around the time that Blacks were finally "given the
priesthood" I had a friend who was taking a BYU photography
class. I went out with her west of Provo to find funky old
farms as photography subjects. In one abandoned farm we found
a lot of junk laying around. So I took my shirt of, stood in
the midst of the junk and dropped my pants so all that was
showing was me from behind. Junk obscured my pants around my
ankles.

She turned it in with her portfolio. Her professor remarked on
that pic and she came up with some interpretation, "he has cast
off all material things for he sees that they are but trash," etc.
He accepted it.

So back in the late 70's my nude backside was allowed in a BYU
photography class assignment. Things have sure changed.

"So back in the late 70's my nude backside was allowed in a BYU
photography class assignment."

That reminds me of a post some Ex-Mo had written years ago. She was in medical school at BYU and had brought her anatomy book to her dorm room. Her roommate, who was a very naive and sheltered freshman, thumbed through the textbook and remarked that the illustrations were pornographic.

There is no medical school at BYU.

"There is no medical school at BYU."

I was just recalling the story from an old post. It was probably a biology or anatomy textbook or something similar.

Are there modesty rules for men too? Maybe the priesthood gives men a free pass regarding modesty.

So all "art" has to abide by the Honor Code at BYU???

So if a TBM wanted to do a photo expose' on the dangers of drinking...they couldn't show any types of alcohol or people drunk??

And this is a Humanities class where expression is 90% of the grade.

This person knew what the rules at BYU Idaho were .Did she really think that artistic expression would by allowed by the Mormon Taliban? I really don't have much empathy for anyone who makes a choice to go to such an institution and the can't belive they have the inane rules that have. Mormonism is one big cluster mess of sexual repression so do not be surprised when they consider a a bare shoulder as obscene .

The problem is she really didn't know what the rules were, as per her comments about her professor holding up paintings showing nudity as examples of great art. Also, she states she thought there might be some leeway, probably given the flesh on show from BYU cheerleaders, dancers at the polynesian center and of course mother Eve herself in the holiest place in all Mormondom.
Well done to her for calling them on it in public.

THIS IS WHY it is embarrassing to have a degree from BYU!

Remember they had to hide Rodin "The Kiss" a couple of decades ago?

I took Art History at BYU. I thought it was interesting although it was mostly about memorizing the names of art pieces from the professor's travel slides.

Imagine my surprise when I went to some of those museums in Europe and saw what was really there!

~~~
Clothing would have detracted from her painted face, IMO. They can't see art without thinking about boobies apparently.
The university is doing its job: the young lady has learned a valuable lesson. This is how the world operates.
She is Sisyphus. In her present damnation, her rock will always attain its angle of repose.
"My subject was not fully nude and she wasn't posing provocatively," Giles said. "But yes, the shoulders were against the [university] dress code and it did imply she was in the shower."
So BYU is anti-showering too?
BYU cheerleaders expose their shoulders at every game (also not showering). So doesn't logic dictate that every BYU cheerleader should be flunked for repeatedly violating the dress code?
"BYU cheerleaders expose their shoulders at every game (also not showering)."
Not to mention wearing short skirts that they can't wear temple garments with. And undershorts that reveal every detail of their thighs and buttocks. Scandalous!
She had really, really bad dandruff, so she went to the house mother on her dorm floor and asked for advice...
"I suggest you try Head and Shoulders."
So a few days later our gal went back with a question:
"So tell me, how do you give shoulders?"
Having earned my art degree in a serious art university I would never hire an artist from BYU or any other ridiculous art program that prohibited something as lame as bare shoulders. Obviously the strength of the job seeker's application would trump everything but I don't think one could be a well-rounded artist without being able to draw the human form from any angle. A thorough knowledge of anatomy is a big part of being an artist. In my own course of study I had:
Basic figure drawing 1&2 (w/nude models)
figure sculpting (nude models)
Clothed figure drawing 1&2 (w/semi-nude models)
Character Design (w/semi-nude models)
Ecorche' (lots of reference of the naked human form)
Anatomy 1&2 (Again with the nude models)
Head and Hands (finally no nude models)
and of course the rest of my classes (like advanced perspective) assumed that I could competently draw a human form by this point.
From the sound of things I don't feel the BYU art program is up to industry standards.
I just remembered that in school I had to take a design class and we sketched nude models; the two fundamentalist christians in the class were OK with drawing a nude body, I recall that their drawings were the most "sexualized" in the whole class!
Its obvious the model is a rule breaker.
Look at that lipstick! You don't wear it like that unless you're trying to hook up at a wild BYU-I party!
She obviously drinks to much too because her "friends" at the party colored her face with magic markers after she passed out.
She was trying to wash it off in the shower before church to hide it!
The artist deserves a failing grade. Documenting your morally loose, drunk friend at a party is hardly art :)
