For those unfamiliar with this part of Mormonism, and to gain some understanding on the dietary restrictions in the LDS Church, it's helpful to read D&C 89.
https://www.lds.org/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/89It's important to remember the times this was written.
NOTE: These instructions were never lived completely.
The one that is part of the Temple Questions has to do with what they call: The Word of Wisdom, re: no coffee, tea, (interpreted from "hot drinks"), alcohol, illegal drugs, predominately.
That is the only part that members, in general, pay any attention to. And, that did not become a demand for obedience until the 1920's.
This is never about the ingredients in the items. It is a test of faith, to put it simply; to abstain from coffee and tea. It is also a requirement, (including tithing and other demands), to enter the Temples.
My observation: religions in general are about power and control of the individual, family, and their acceptance, "worthiness" and faith are judged by their level of obedience.
Mormonism takes control to the absolute; control of the naked body by use of the temple garments known as the Holy Garment of the Melchizedek Priesthood which both men and women wear next to their skin.
There are the "letter of the law" type Mormons that take everything to an extreme adding their own interpretation of the laws, such as not drinking or eating chocolate or sodas and other items they add to their list, thinking this will add to their faithfulness.
Generally, most Mormons live "the spirit of the law" which is simply what is required and no more to satisfy the law of obedience.
When a person leaves the LDS Church, one of the things they have to do is to take their power back and own it. That means that the LDS Church and their leaders have absolutely no power over them to tell them what to drink, eat, dress, what movies to see, what to do on Sunday and on and on. They discard the temple garment as the last bastion of control, often in a kind of ritual that symbolizes that they have taken their power back completely!
