I have been reading and posting on this Board for the past 3 weeks, maybe more than I should.

It has been cathartic and heart breaking for me to read the personal exit stories, some of which mirror my own.

My story is no more or no less important than any of the others, and maybe some day I will share it.

The site is very ADDICTIVE and I often have strong emotions when I am on it, some positive and some negative.

For those of you on here often, and for far longer than I, do any of you feel ADDICTED?

Oh, yeah! I need my RFM fix several times during the day.

It's starting to feel unhealthy dealing with the same emotions day after day? Does anyone feel like they have to take a break once in a while?

As a nevermo, I don't have the same emotional investment in either the church or departing it, but I've still had times where I felt a little burned out and had to "get away" for awhile. But it's never long before some discussion with my LDS wife or nonsense with my in-laws leads me back here for a sanity check.

I take breaks now and then. I typically come here a couple times a day. But I have taken 2-3 month breaks from it as well. I have been coming here for about 10 years now.

When withdrawal sets in, RFM stops the twitching. If that doesn't work, I eat some ground coffee straight from the jar, drink a bottle of Thunderbird, and send a contribution to the ACLU (scares my relatives more than porn. :)

I understand the Thunderbird and the ACLU - but eating ground coffee:)

I was just trying to sound deranged, playing to the Mormon stereotype of exMos. OTOH, people do regularly eat chocolate covered coffee beans, or even straight roasted beans. Why not ground coffee? Mix in some cinnamon and sugar, or chocolate powder, and a glass of milk to wash it down. Maybe it could be a thing. :)

I guess that explains your posts that start out:
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

:)

The initial "addiction" comes from finding your own people. Being understood is one of life's greatest pleasures. Connection. "All the time I thought, there's only me. Crazy in a way that no one else could be. Who've thought that you were somewhere too, thinking all the time . . . there's only you." Somebody sang that.

Beyond that you can actually achieve healing through understanding by "talking something to death," until the humor starts to seep in or you are sick of seeing your same old words on the screen.

Then, another addiction is those who really sincerely would like to help, to make others feel not alone, and supported. Some of us have a savior complex and others like to share valuable information, history, and a new slant. It helps.

Then, the final addiction is those of us who really need something to take our mind off a hectic schedule for a few minutes. Can be very entertaining at times.

I have been guilty of all of the above plus I think what I have to say is SO important, haha. Lots move on very quickly tho.

When I first found this site, something like 15 years ago, I spent two to three hours a day on it for months. I read the stories, looked at the postings, looked into claims by both people here and the morg, cross-referencing things. It was only then I decided that I could no longer consider myself mormon in spite of their claims. Yes they can still call me as such since I have not resigned but I don't contribute to their coffers, either directly or indirectly if I can help it.

Agnes - shouldn't we do that as a large group together on Temple Square?

Brother RebelJameDean, please raise your arm to the square.

You covenant and promise before God, angels, and these witnesses at this website, that you do accept the law of consecration as contained in this, Recovery From Mormonism, in that you do consecrate yourselves, your time, talents, and everything with which the Lord has blessed you, or with which he may bless you, for the building up of the kingdom of anti-Mormonism on the earth and for the establishment of Apostasy.

Bow your head and say, "Yes."

Ya I think I spend a little more time here than I should. But most people spend their time watching "the View" or Judge Judy. This is more mind stimulating for me.

That's what Mormons use to keep themselves weaned off reality.

When I first found this board I read everything and was disappointed when I'd come back and there wasn't anything to read. Now I come more for a break from work. I was just eating my lunch while reading here. I have been back here more often lately as I got off fb and I need something to read while having lunch or when I can't stand to do one more report before I take a break from my job.

It was very healing for me to read here and post here. I've come a long, long ways since then.

I have an addictive personality anyway but visiting this site is becoming a longer term addiction now. It may even become a habit I have become devoted to, like some other long term habits I have acquired over the years.

My kids think I am strange for posting on RFM. But I do not play video games. I am sane and they are gamers.

No, it's not an addiction. A true addiction alters you uncontrollably and ends with a loss of life. Heroin use becomes an addiction, daily coffee is pure fucking joy!

RfM is fun, poignant, sassy, and irreverent. Enjoy, post, share, laugh, cuss, but don't attack or bully! The Joyful Boner.

The Internet is addicting I've found. I wake up with it, check it throughout the day. Check updates on the news, weather, e-mails, social webs, my family, etc. I do that and more online.

And work. Who doesn't use a computer for work? Is it addicting, or is it an extension of our lives?

For a despot to take over the world he'd either have to control the Internet, or deprive us of it so we wouldn't be 'connected,' to our newsfeed and information dissemination.

RfM is a place where ex-Mormons identify with other ex-Mormons. Not too many places where you can go to do that. Here I can vent where I don't on Facebook with my Mormon friends/family.

Most people here are seeking community and a support group, I've found. I see that not as an addiction, so much as a basic human need. It's one little corner of cyberspace where you can explore what makes you you.

ETA: Being a Mormon was a peculiar religion. Most people whether secular or religious don't identify with what it's like being born and raised inside the Mormon cult, unless they experienced it themselves. That's something you find here that you don't elsewhere.

Unless you have a local meetup - there are some really good ex-Mormon groups that meet locally.

Alright maybe I have a problem but this site makes me feel like I have real friends cause they've dealt with mormonism too. Its hard to make friends in my town also so that doesn't help.

I just realized that I've been coming here every day since 2007 - and I've never even been a mormon.

In fact, I've never met an active mormon, although I've met a few exmos IRL through RfM - and each time it has been a source of great joy ! :-D

I admit I'm addicted to the people who come to RfM...

But don't worry, I'm a long way away ;-)

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The biggest difference between our ancestors screeching in the treetops and us is the topic of conversation. RfM is a very interesting place.

Validation is one important thing that brings most of us to this discussion board. We all desire community with others who share similar views. If we can't find it at home we look for it elsewhere.

I am grateful for the internet and those who manage this board that make this community possible. We all independently came to the same conclusions regarding the church and each of us has something unique to bring to the discussion.

I find too much consensus of thought boring and stagnating when there are so many important things in the broader world yet to explore and discover that we don’t agree on. I look for opportunities to discuss these things as well so long as we can do it respectfully as the board managers wish it.
