I predict with advances in science and the proliferation of the internet, that TSCC will collapse under its own weight.

I predict that we will see members of the Q12 come out and say that the religion is a fraud.

I predict that we will see one or more major financial scandals involving church finances.

I predict that we will see some suicides from high ranking members of the faith.

Any other predictions?

I agree with the first prediction but not the others.

The Q12 (made men) have too much to lose and their extended families would suffer.

The church controls its finances legally like any other large corporation.

High ranking members have no intention of dying. They really don't want to go peacefully into the night because deep down they fear what awaits them.

Mormonism is more like a disease that will burn itself out. Already you can see that the farm is drying up. Lowering the missionary age and pulling out of BSA to better control the indoctrination process is a hail-mary attempt to keep Mormon seed for their incubators that need to marry an RM in the temple. Yeah, uh, good luck with that.

You can't convert them, you can't grow them. So, Mormonism is going to gradually fade away.

Maybe they will be a quaint little American sect of Christianity, forever stuck in the 1950s with white shirts. Think Amish- isolated and stuck in time.

Or maybe....

They will morph inch by inch into Christianity as the members learn not to give a crap about their history.

Or maybe...

They will adapt and figure out how to be the next great religion that takes off by preaching how to be rich or something that people actually want to hear. (Hahahahaha!)

Or maybe...

They will become the Science-based religion and actually preach factual things and lose the BS parts. People who need a spiritual home might like something like that in 100 years.

Or maybe...

They will die out and no one will care or notice.

Have you ever read Heinlein?

Mormons will be self-perpetuating.

They aren't going to die out.

As long as there are holdouts (and there are,) it isn't going anywhere.

The church is full of people like me. I absolutely believed despite having obvious evidence thrown in my face from time to time. I found every way to justify it in my mind. The scrolls simply inspired Jospeh Smith, maybe there was an earlier version of Egyptian, thus causing the new translations of the boa scrolls to be incorrect (desperate, I know) etc... The only thing that got me out was seperating myself from it by many thousands of miles, and then seeing it from a different perspective. There will always be people like me who will he almost impossible to sway. So I believe it will keep going.

Yes, it will most definitely be around in a hundred years. I'll even bet you twenty bucks that I'm right! :)

Seriously, there's a high enough birth rate. Utah provides a Mormon core of orthodox believers. And, there are enough "enemies" to keep the church going--worldliness, porn, shifting morals, etc.

As to the Mormon influence and power a hundred years from now, a lot depends on the Morg's finances and an what will happen in an increasingly secular America.

A question I've always wondered was if Joseph Smith hadn't been martyred if Mormonism would have survived?

True. If they can manage to keep women focused on breeding and they breed faster than other groups, they win! They surely have learned that much from the other great religions that survived.

Somehow they will need to keep members from recognizing or caring that one of our greatest problems in the world is overpopulation. Producing Mormons from Mormons is top priority!

Idiocracy on steroids. The temples will be held up with ropes and duct tape.

I do wonder about what will happen to the McTemples--perhaps the Angel Moroni's green dispensary? Just saying...

probably so, but it will only be a token skeleton of what it is now and far FAR cry from their original power hungry MORmON pipe dream of having taken over the world by now. make no mistake about, the MORmON religion has already failed according to the (outlandish) expectations laid out for it by its (outlandish) founder, pervert MORmON Joe Smith. And in the large picture, in a historical context, at best MORmONISM will finally amount to a (pseudo christian) pimple on the rear end of traditional Christianity. However the word "MORmON" will probably be nearly synonymous with "scam" and "shady" and stuff to be avoided by then.

Yes, but it won't be recognizable. The church i grew up in is history. And it's denied history at that. Mormons will have same sex marriage and coffee within a century.

Don, me thinks it already does.

Just sayin.

The people who are guilty as charged aren't talking.

I've known many a Mormon who drinks tea and coffee while holding a TR.

Surely there are closet gays. Look at all the people on this board who married one temple recommend and all. Some knowingly, others not so much.

My dad hid his booze underneath haystacks and around our farm, according to one of my TBM brothers who'd find them while working or playing outside.

This while dad was a church going TR holder. I didn't even know this, how good dad was at hiding his booze from us. He was a closet alcoholic.

Both my parents drank Coca Cola and Pepsi like sieves during their tumultuous temple married years.

Between my dad's alcoholism, my mom's addiction to prescription narcotics, and the caffeinated drinks - that is what sustained them more than the church did. It also contributed to the demise of their marriage. Just as well, that is water under the bridge now.

I hear ya on the unrecognizable church. The church I grew up in doesn't exist anymore and its pisses me off that they try to deny that it even existed.

I think the LDS church will continue as a business enterprise. It could be self sustaining from that. It doesn't need many members to be a pretend church.

Agreed. The business will keep on going. It's such a great sham of a way to be non-profit and keep their finances hidden. They need enough worker bees to give the free labor and they should breed enough of those for quite awhile. The longer it goes on, the more the rational, thinking people will leave and the weirder and more fringe the active members will be.

Joseph Smith would not have been able to recognize Brigham Young's church.

Brigham Young would not have recognized the 1950's church.

1950's Mormons (like me) do not recognize the current church.

The church will very likely exist, but unrecognizable to any but those in the present. They will teach that it has always been like that. Always. Because God and his church and his doctrines are "eternal and everlasting." "We've always allowed gays to lead the church. Always," they'll insist.

General Authorities will, by that time, openly smirk at conference attendees. All 200 of them.

There will always be people who would stay in the church even if the GAs revealed themselves as flesh-eating lizard people.

It will probably become a lot less white though. It's stagnating in the US and Europe, but who knows how long it will continue to grow in Africa... Irony at its finest.

I think it will only exist in Utah and maybe the Morridor as a quaint local sect. It will die out in the rest of the US and the rest of the world.

I hope that I am around when utah MORmONS have to drive past one of their former Utah temples that had to be sold off for cash to keep LDS inc afloat and has since been re purposed to some other more profitable use.

I cannot fathom how ANY religion
could still exist in 100 years,
including islam and christianity.

But that's because I am educated.

Religion only needs one thing to thrive: ignorance.

As long as some people are not willing or able
to learn how science works,
they will be susceptible to chronic religion.

I am less than a novice when it comes to understanding Mormon Church finances but if the church failed in the next 100 years, who would get the billions? Of what I understand the church operates under two corporations. The first is controlled by the First Presidency and the second by the presiding bishopric. Who are the equity holders of these corporations and if the organization were disbanded who would control the assets. I suspect that there might only be 15 members but the incentives would be great to hold on because at the end, presumably someone would walk away as the BIG winner and I really doubt it would be Jesus.

Articles state that, if the corporation sole closes up shop, all assets have to be distributed to other non-profits. No "prophet" is going to walk away with billions...the lawyers might find a way to funnel money out through non-profit shell corporations though. Now would be a good time to give it a go since the current president is waiting to die.

Nobody ever thought the Catholics would be left holding the bag with huge empty Cathedrals, but they are.

I think it will go the same way with mormons. Dying off in fits and starts. The end result being most of them centered around the mormon vatican in Utah.

The point that I was building up to is that as long as there is money this organization will not fail or go away. It has nothing to do with doctrine or religion. The elite of the church benefit greatly with jobs and educational benefits to their offspring. Just from a materialistic view, the prestige and benefits are great. Many of the men in the higher echelon of the church must know that it is utter bullshit. You would have to be a village idiot to ignore the enormous evidence and I presume that they read what's on the internet and even what lies hidden in their vaults. How willing would most be people be to live a lie if they could greatly profit? I think most tenured employees of any organization have willing prostituted themselves to make a living. The church is no different. My only question would be, why would anyone facilitate such nonsense and join this group. It's like volunteering to be a drone in a beehive (pun intended).
