I just read this article which refers to the "ancient" prophet Moroni. Moroni is a fictitious character that was invented in the early 19th century. He is neither a prophet, nor is he ancient, unless 180 years is considered to be so.

The Mormons put the information out there and journalists publish it as though it's fact.

Moroni is the name of the capital city of the Comoros islands, where Joe Sr. supposedly lost a fortune in ginseng due to shipwreck. Those are real places. Moroni has changed its name slightly from the 19th century spelling found on period maps.
