"Members had already voted Tuesday to condemn gambling and Planned Parenthood..."

So, some small progress, but still a long way to go...

Uh, what's the problem with gambling and Planned Parenthood?

Nothing. Which is why their vote to condemn them means the convention still has a way to go. :)

A gambling *addiction* or compulsion or problem -- sure. Condemn it. And then get people who have it some help.

Planned Parenthood provides free or low-cost medical services to millions of women a year, and only a tiny fraction of their services involve abortions. Condemning it is silly.

Agreed. Thanks for clarifying. :-)

On average, Planned Parenthood performs 887 abortions a day, so over 320,000 abortions a year. There *is* something wrong with mass murder.

Factually incorrect. But you know that is a lie and wrote it anyway.

a) it's not "mass murder."
b) abortions make up about 3% of all the services PP provides.

Factually correct. See above. When you deal in facts, there's no need to worry about lying. You should try it.

"Abortions accounted for 3 percent of the nearly 10.6 million total services provided by Planned Parenthood clinics in 2013, according to its annual report.
Some services it provided in addition to abortions were:
4.5 million tests and treatment for sexually transmitted infections
3.6 million contraception related services
935,573 cancer screenings including breast exams and Pap tests
1.1 million pregnancy tests and prenatal services"

I could tell you from a Southern Baptist point of view...but I don't think some would appreciate it here.

I truly believe in the Baptist theology, BUT, there is some very and truly dark history regarding some of the Southern Baptist religion in the US and racism, KKK, and other really horrible and terrible things.

That said, the Southern Baptists are NOT a united religion like the Mormons/LDS church is. In fact, they are probably the least united in doctrine, culture, and organized clergy than almost any other US church. In fact, each Southern Baptist congregation is it's OWN church and religion (think if LDS wards were each their own religion and church in and of themselves).

We share a united theology with tenets of doctrine that are the same at it's core. Hence we are somewhat united at times in the Southern Baptist Convention which each church is free to leave at any time if they so choose.

It is significant to make a vote on the alt-right, but it is NOT like the LDS church's decisions, and is not binding to any church individually. The convention is just that, a Convention of the Southern Baptists...but the fact that many united in such a vote can show solidarity among the different churches that are a part of the convention.

Better late, than never?
----

We had a next-door Southern Baptist family.

Their was no-question about it: He ruled the family.

His wife was so shy, or intimidated, that she virtually never exited her bedroom the whole time they lived there.

He very much disliked the "Mormons", and believed we weren't Christians. Nevertheless, over the years, we were able to make "back-yard-fence" friends with him.

The saga moved on (with much more excitement), until the remains of the family moved away, and the house was sold.

We did, however, get to go to his funeral, and (as has been mentioned), the leader of the group was part-time only (as he had to hold down a full-time job also, in order to pay the rent).

I was glad to be able to go to the funeral, and see how things operated there (as,if I remember correctly), 'strangers' were not usually welcomed.

All this was several decades ago. So, how does it sound today, some 50 or so years later?

Don't they still say that women have to submit to their husbands? So they still got that male supremacy thing going on.

So when will they merge with those baptists that they broke away from to support slavery ?

When does this vote happen? The link did not work for me. I hope they pass that particular resolution, and I hope the final tally isn't especially close.

"WHEREAS, there has arisen in the United States a growing menace to political order and justice that seeks to reignite social animosities, reverse improvements in race relations, divide our people, and foment hatred, classism, and ethnic cleansing; and

WHEREAS, this toxic menace, self-identified among some of its chief proponents as “White Nationalism” and the “Alt-Right,” must be opposed for the totalitarian impulses, xenophobic biases, and bigoted ideologies that infect the minds and actions of its violent disciples; and

WHEREAS, the roots of White Supremacy within a “Christian context” is based on the so-called “curse of Ham” theory once prominently taught by the SBC in the early years—echoing the belief that God through Noah ordained descendants of Africa to be subservient to Anglos—which provided the theological justification for slavery and segregation. The SBC officially renounces the “curse of Ham” theory in this Resolution; now be it therefore

RESOLVED, that the Southern Baptist Convention, meeting in Phoenix, AZ, June 13-14, 2017, denounces every form of “nationalism” that violates the biblical teachings with respect to race, justice, and ordered liberty; and be it further

RESOLVED, that we reject the retrograde ideologies, xenophobic biases, and racial bigotries of the so-called “Alt-Right” that seek to subvert our government, destabilize society, and infect our political system; and be finally

RESOLVED, that we earnestly pray, both for those who lead and advocate this movement and those who are thereby deceived, that they may see their error through the light of the Gospel, repent of their perverse nationalism, and come to know the peace and love of Christ through redeemed fellowship in the Kingdom of God, which is established from every nation, tribe, people and tongue."
