My grandmother would send me tapes of gospel music on my mission. At the time, I just thought that she was purchasing items from a "Readers Digest" MMM thingy.
It was not sanctioned by the LDS.
Many inspirational songs. Thanks grandma!

My mission had a rule that the only approved music was what was sold in the mission bookstore which was a couple of Mormon Tabernacle Choir tapes and the official hymnbook chorus recordings. But hardly anyone followed that rules, most of my companions had all kinds of music. Also one of the few rules I broke wantonly
Actually thinking back, having some nice music to listen to kept me sane! I think of an Alison Kraus tape I had. Faith Hill tape. Felicia Sorenson

My "approved" cassette tape player (for playing only approved music, of course) also had an FM radio in it. One late night, when I was in Caen, France, I couldn't sleep...so I turned it on, put in my earphone (yes, mono, not stereo), and started randomly tuning through the FM band. Suddenly I picked up an English FM station, playing a song from the just-released Supertramp Album "Breakfast in America" -- "Child of Vision."
I sinfully loved it. And had a new band to check out.
But only late-nights when my companion was out like a light...

:)

Mission bookstore? I didn't realize there was such a thing.
