If you start with the conclusion, the church is true, then you can rationalize the most reprehensible behavior, even wife swapping, child rape and genocide. Kinda like the Fundies, singing the praises of Warren Jeffs, as he rots in jail on multiple child rape convictions.

If you assume the church to be true than there can be no evidence that is it false.

Correct. There is only SEEMING evidence against its claims that reasonable people might well regard as genuine and damning.

But if you are unreasonable, all you have to do is ASSUME the claims are true so the evidence against it proves not to be so.

I think I'm going to assume that it's really 5:30 and just go home. If my boss, who's a reasonable person finds out and says that the evidence on the clock was damning since it only said 4:00, all I have to do is say that I assumed someone set the clock back, so that proves it's not so.

I can't stand his smug writing style. But in this case the comments that follow are even more mind-blowing. What is most remarkable to me is how TBMs seem to lately be backing away from "We are The One True Church."

My exact thought when reading the comments. The way he replies blows my mind. Did you notice that some of his comments are "you completely misunderstood", yet he never explains what the person misunderstood.

Dan uses the same tactics in his "apologetic" articles.
He typically follows this pattern:

-- mention a criticism someone has voiced
-- insist the criticism has no merit
-- explain why the person who brought it up is a low-life, lying, disgusting excuse for a human being
-- state that because the person mentioning it is such a bad person, the criticism can't be valid
-- claim victory, without ever actually addressing the criticism

Though this fallacy pattern has been pointed out to him again and again, he continues to use it. Either he doesn't know any better (doubtful), or he doesn't care that it's fallacy because it plays well to the "faithful," and he gets paid to do it.

But the pattern *is* a constant. Reply to critics with insults, rather than addressing the criticism. While lots of apologists (mormon and other) do the same, Dan has raised it to a disturbing, fallacious art form.

Just imagine how hard it would be to make everyday decisions in life if you take this approach.

Whatever huckster X says is true, now I just need to make it fit.
