Some weeks after leaving the cult (6 or 5 months ago) bishop sent me a message to give him my TR, and I gave him.
But then each time I told this to a TBM, they look at me as if that was a weird thing.
Is that weird or just a trick to make me feel bad and come back to TSCC?.
If he did it for the second reason, it was an epic fail because I not only gave him my TR, I also gave my mom's one.

I say ignore such a mindless request.

That TR belongs to you. Don't turn it over to him.

Yeah, he was just trying to mess with your mind. My bish never asked for mine. Don't fret over it - it's just a piece of paper that allows you into a place you don't want to go anyway.

No, the TR does belong to LDS, Inc. It even says so in the fine print

It belongs to the holder.

On what basis? Why would they put in that fine print if it was legally not so?

Sincere question. I figured if it were put to the legal test, the court would find for LDS, Inc?

If they want to prove they own them, they would need to prove it legally. There has been no such court case.

I'd love to see the church try to sue for the return of a worthless piece of paper. It's just another bishop pretending to have power demanding to be obeyed.

No reason to even ask. In his TR book, the TR numbers are listed next to the name of the person. He can go on-line and cancel. You may still hold the paper, but you would be declined at the temple. Kind of like holding a credit card that has been cancelled.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. :)

Stake presidents will cancel a recommend online. Having it in your possession means nothing. If you tried to enter the temple you'd be turned away. I still have my last one, though it expired long ago.

Thanks for the answers, now I understand why all were surprised when I told them that.
Fortunately he couldn't hurt me doing that because I wasn't going to return to TSCC before knowing if the church was true or not (which I had told him in our last meeting and my last day in the chapel)

Some bishops do ask for it back. There have been stories on this board of bishops asking for it back at other times as well.

If it had been me and I had already resigned my answer would have been "Stick it where the sun don't shine"

I would like to resign but as I live outside the US I don't know how to do it.

Send the Member Records department in Salt Lake City an email of resignation. Include the name of your local ward and bishop. You might also email the bishop as well, giving him a heads-up that you've already contacted Member Records and he can expect to be hearing from them shortly.

Email to: msr-confrec@ldschurch.org

I think the best answer to this is:

"I threw it in the trash when I threw out my garments and all my Mormon books."

The problem is that I had return my TR.
But the good thing is that when I was a mormon I was unemployed (so, no tithing).

Well played. Atleast you dont have that burden that thousands of your dollars went to someone's salary.

The temple recommend is akin computer software. You really don’t own the software, but buy a license to use it within the parameters of the Software License Agreement (SLA). None of us actually read the SLA, we just click AGREE.

In the future, the Morg might team up with google to track all members’ online history. Then, the TR would automatically update—or not—depending on one’s browser history. And, as no one has read the TR License Agreement (TRLA), just said AGREE in the interview, the future penalty for violation might be grim indeed! George Orwell’s Boner.

What fun it would have been to have responded with a note:

Dear Bishop x:

You've asked for my temple recommend. Here it is:

I recommend that no one go to the temple. Not for baptisms, not for washings, not for annointing, not for endowments, and not for sealings. In a nutshell, I do not recommend the temple.

Bishop...I'd be happy to return it...but this is the ONLY way I will do so.

Go hang up a white sheet in your office, cut a few holes in it. You stand on one side and I'll stand on the other side. Then we'll have a nice little chat, something like this...

"Do you have your temple recommend?"
"I do."
"Will you give it to me?"
"I will through the veil."

Answer: none.

The only reason a bishop would demand a TR from an exmo is to humiliate them and to make a show of power.

The piece of paper belongs to the person whose name is on it.

The mormon church does not have to honor it. They have a right to ban any person with or without a TM from entering their temples and other buildings for any reason unless they have a legal warrant.

I can't imagine why anyone would be concerned that the church needs defunct TRs. I also can't imagine that the morg would try to prosecute members or former member for losing it or not giving it back to them on demand.
