Despite our more modern world, the internet, and humanity's increase in knowledge, there are sadly still lots of people who will believe a slick con-man with a slick "god" story...
Unfortunately, sometimes, it doesn't even have to do with God.
There are lots of "business opportunities" out there that you can join, and they let you buy a 4 serving box of mashed potatoes for $40 wholesale along with lots of other grossly overpriced products!
Then, all you have to do is sign up 2,000 other suckers to be a millionaire.
People will follow just about any leader, good or bad. It's in their nature.
Funny though, the church did speak out against MLMs in the last conference. They specifically said to avoid money making schemes. They must realize it is a problem within the church as well.
MLM's were addressed not because they're evil, immoral, or manipulating; but because they are stealing $$$ from their tithing coffers. When BPs and SPs have to explain why the tithing is short, then MLM's become the scapegoat.

Listen well, wanker! The Boner would be happy with a 5-inch floppy if it worked. The drive is still there, but not the software! Hie still uses his legacy 3.5” equipment.

Yes, a charismatic cult leader could build a cult around anything and use mass communications to market it. Joseph would get a new wardrobe, have a supermodel wife, and have a iPhone X.
Many have pointed out the similarities between Jim Jones and JS. I know some of you will disagree, but I think a modern day Smith would have made a more inclusive message of hope and love to attract the masses. I don't think there would have been a BoM. Hell, he may have even pandered to the LGBT crowd. Who knows!
