10. Do you support, affiliate with, or agree with any group or individual whose teachings
or practices are contrary to or oppose those accepted by The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints?

Yes.

Group? The morons (affiliate, not support or agree with). Individual? The devil [of the Mormon church]/ general (liars) [so-called] 'authorities'.

Let's say a devout 18-year-old Mormon guy who is hoping to go on a Mission has a best friend who is a devout Roman Catholic. Surely the Catholic Church (as well as Protestant churches) must have some teachings that are contrary to what the Mormon Church teaches. So our devout Mormon guy would have to answer, yes, he does affiliate in friendship with an individual whose teachings and practices are contrary to the Mormon Church.

Or am I reading too much into this question?

This always puzzled me as well. My father was strongly anti-Mormon and taught me continually that Mormonism was an evil fraud. He came home almost every day with something new about the corrupt Mormon Church. Yet, I supported him and affiliated with him very closely. I loved him and trusted him but still, strangely, believed in Mormonism. And my father was the one who took me to the airport to leave on my mission and cared for my car while I was gone. He supported me for most of my life and I was not supposed to support him. Very, very odd situation.

This one always seemed odd to me, since the correct answer is "No."
"No, but I sure expect to as soon as I reach the mission field... And by the way, what happened to 'every member a missionary?' Wouldn't 'affiliating' with nonmember friends be kind of necessary for that? WTF."

I thought the sex questions would have been more explicit.

"Have you ever put your ****** in a *******."

Dyslexia? Really? So you cannot read the scriptures out loud it makes you exempt? Makes me think of Klinger on M.A.S.H. I cannot read aloud. Now send me home/reject me so I can get on with my life.

If I'd gotten a grilling like that to serve a mission I'd have rethought the whole thing. But I guess that's what they want. Fewer missionaries.

I see this list in terms of two issues:

(1) Complaints from MPs all over the world about being sent "flawed" missionaries who require inordinate amounts of time for them to deal with, and will often wind up being sent home early.

(2) The plan, mentioned in another thread at the moment, to lower the number of missionaries from the recent all-time high of 88,000 to a steady 70,000. A number of these questions seem likely to derail or at least to put the brakes down hard on many applications.

Weeding out the "problem children" pre-MTC and reducing the quantity in the mission field -- both accomplished at once by shrewd interrogations along these lines. That's the idea.

Concerning the question about psychiatric medications, the use of which is now so prevalent compared to yesteryear, it's also a hard disqualification for military service unless discontinued over a year before enlistment, and the prospective recruit is certified to be functioning normally without the drug.

Likewise, we know that kids today are unfortunately more likely to be obese and out of shape than ever in the past, and so one of the questions is largely about: will you be able to survive bicycling (and walking) for many miles a week? My hunch is that the MPs in Outer Ozonia are probably also sending complaints about too many out-of-shape American teenagers breaking down by the side of the road or reporting injuries due to unaccustomed physical stress and strain. Below the level of the expected damage from serving on true "hardship" missions.

I agree with your assessment and would add:

3) The LDS church doesn't want any missionaries that could get it in legal trouble. Note that questions 7, 8, and 9 ask about specific legal issues, though 8 in general would be covered by 5. Question 13, I think, would prevent most disabled people from serving as well.

I live in the country and still have dial up, so I can't get a copy of those questions downloaded successfully.

But I can read stuff posted here with out problem.

Could somebody cut and paste the questions here, so I can see what they are going to be hitting my neices and nephews with?

Thanks in advance.

I've been out of the cult for almost 30 years now. Reading this made me ill. I can't believe there was a time in my life when reading something like this intimidated me and made me feel unworthy, and oh how I beat myself up and tried so hard to be "worthy." What an oppressive, judgmental and unforgiving cult I belonged to.

I was surprised that heavy petting was lumped in with adultery and serious violation of civil law: "A person who has been guilty (I like how they make it a crime) of adultery, fornication, HEAVY PETTING, homosexual activity, other sexual perversions, serious violations of civil law, or other serious transgressions must repent before he or she may be recommended for missionary service"

The other thing that I noticed for the first time is that only chastity and tithing are laws: law of tithing, law of chastity. Can they even legally be called laws? I wonder why keeping the Sabbath day holy and word of wisdom are not also identified as laws. Weird.

...grinding the mommy and daddy parts!

Once you got the hang of it, and prepared for it properly, dry humping was sublime. All the pleasure, none of the risk...

When I confessed of heavy petting before my mission, I was "guilty" of having my boobs and butt stroked while fully clothed. My punishment was abstaining from the sacrament for two months and reading "The Miracle of Forgiveness" aka, "It's a Miracle if You're Forgiven." I was 21 years old. I can't believe I let the creepy bishop have such power over me.

even now at age 52. He went on a mission and he shouldn't have. But he didn't have dyslexia and hadn't been on medication for depression, etc. He can read scriptures out loud. They didn't ask here if they have any disabilities like he had a stroke when he was born and doesn't have good use of his left arm and leg, but he can use them, just not well. He is mentally disabled, was in special education (what do they call it now)?

Am I missing something here? Or is he just already eliminated (like he should have been). His mission was a huge mistake. He has never been the same.

Yes, for the work that is supposedly the most important work on the face of the earth, I have seen the Church just in my lifetime weirdly waffle back and forth between wanting seemingly every possible person/body be a missionary (i.e., 18 month missions, age change to 18), and making the requirements suddenly more difficult to go (i.e, raising the bar, and now these interview questions). They cannot seem to make up their collective mind for more than a decade.

Well it's not as easy as the old days where the prophet just had to decide who's wife he wanted and send her husband on a mission.

Who Cares what the church does anyway?

If a silly 18 year old wants to go on a mission, then that's his prerogative.

In fact, if he can answer all of these silly questions......and still feel that it's his duty to go, then Mr., Fare the Well....

"Though I’ve belted you an flayed you,
By the livin’ Gawd that made you,
You’re a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

As a former MORmON missionary, Ive only got one question for potential Doomsday CULT recruuters, "Are you sure you want to spend the next two years being forced to lie by ommission as you sell a deeply flawed product?"

How about asking the missionary, "What do you know about the Mormon Church? Would you like to know more? ...Really?" Because I didn't know I was omitting anything on my mission. I honestly shared all the info I had and sometimes that got me into trouble.

I guess they feel like the bishops didn't get the hint 15 years ago when The Brethren specifically stated not to use a mission to reactivate a young person who was falling by the wayside.

The explicit legal questions are obviously from church legal staff trying to cover their asse(t)s.
