I am inspired by another thread. So having a shout out.

Netherlands 1978 - 1991.
Branches I was in: Vlissingen, Lelystad and Apeldoorn. It was my mom, my sister and me. We were baptised in Vlissingen.

Anyone here on a mission there in those days?

I love Prague - it's one of my favorite cities in Europe. Besides the missionary work, did you enjoy living there?

dan, I'm *sure* we crossed paths. I was in the Paris mission '79-'81...

I was in Boulogne-Billancourt, Caen, Poitiers, Versailles.

Did you have Fairbanks as a comp by any chance?
I think you may have been in Rennes when I was in Caen...:)

I thought so. Yeah, we met in France. Salut, mon frere :)
No time in the same city/apartment together, sadly. I started in Boulogne/Billancourt, though -- metro instead of bikes, lunches in the park in front of la tour Eiffel, not bad, right?

I was the Californian with a common French surname, if that rings any bells for you...

Nice to see you here among the apostates! :)

The apostates are much more fun....remember Gates, the AP ? He is still running full speed ahead and is now the SP here where I no longer attend...our kids were friends in high school, so I crossed paths with him once in a while.

I do! He was roommates with my brother at BYU before he went on his mission.

I ran into Pres. Robinson in SLC about 10 years after I got home, I was there visiting family. He was pretty disappointed to learn I was out. I wasn't :)

Still trying to live the dream?

Can we please get at least 50 people to log in and state where they devoted two years of their life to shilling for a cult?

It does, but only for members of a certain sub, and it only maps the location of the exmo, not the mission location.

Switzerland 1986-88 (French speaking)

This included parts of France. In the MTC we were lumped together with almost all the other French speaking missionaries. Suisse/France was great, especially the Riviera! But then I was not the most devoted spreader of the gospel. Southern France had too many distractions. On the bad side, I think I damaged my shoulders carrying too many blasted BofM's in my backpack!!!

Switzerland/France '81-'83. Didn't enjoy the things I had to do, but loved the shit out of where I was. I had never been out of Utah. It was the very slow, unformed beginning of the end of my belief in Mormonism.

However, if you are the "piano player" (:-) we've already had this exchange...although it's been years.

Learned Spanish. Learned a lot about people from walks of life far different from my own. That was a very valuable lesson. It's the only thing that made my mission worthwhile.

even in the 60s it was awful? i still operate under the delusion that somehow it was "different back then," like maybe missions were not the structured drudgery i knew in the 90s

My experience would support your thesis.

I've long expounded on a dividing line between a time when missionaries were treated as volunteers and the current atmosphere in which they are treated as slaves.

And I propose that the change from D-day to P-day effectively marks the transition date.

New England - 68-70. There is really a huge difference between missions in the 50’ and 60’s and those today. If we had a mission rule book to follow, I don’t remember it.
