My wife and I where talking last night at dinner about the apostils we have been out of the church for a few years. We know some of passed away and don't know who the new ones are. WE and started laughing as youth we could name them all and tell you all about them. Crazy how life changes for the better

When I was a Mormon I recognized a few names but could never have gotten six right. I honestly thought it didn't matter. It was Jesus's church, and his was the name that was important. The faceless white men in SLC were his servants and more or less interchangeable.

I remember being surprised when my lack of knowledge pissed off my stake president. He was offended that I did not know more of the names of apostles and of local leaders. I thought, "what the f*ck, is this a church of men or God's church?" I had spent all my time learning the scriptures and doctrine. . .

Wrong on both scores. First, the doctrine didn't matter at all and would change unpredictably. Second, Jesus is just a figurehead who legitimizes the worldly power of the men in the hierarchy.

I'm pleased that I can't name those guys. I do know one of them looks like an angry Deputy Dawg. Most of them behave mighty judgemental and one named Oaks excels at
that. If most of us were in a room when Bednar entered, we'd have to leave because his ego would crowd us out. And I believe at least one of them was acknowledged to have died recently. And the one waiting for Monson to die is even older than him. That's the best I can do.

I remember taking a test in Seminary, Junior year of high school to name all of the apostles from just their pictures.

I flunked the test because I only got 8.

My teacher was also my bishop, (Bishop Asshole, of whom I've spoken before) so he had me stay after class and I took the test again, and passed it with some help from BA.

IIRC, there was about 4 in the retest. We all passed.

I think Christofferson was the junior apostle when I left the cult. I know he's moved up a few slots since then. I really don't give a shit, but it's one of those unwelcome things that is forever etched into my brain because of my cult upbringing.

I had a junior high social studies teacher, about 1962, who made sure we knew not only the President, Vice President, and Governor, but our representatives in Congress and the state legislature, and also the party leaders in Congress, the major cabinet secretaries, and the heads of important foreign states.

Sometimes I ask people if they can name the Kardashians or the Red Sox pitching rotation, the front line of the Patriots, or some such thing. They usually can get at least a few. Then I ask them who their Congrassman is, and always get a blank face.

To think that Massachusetts is supposed to be a politically savvy state! We are doomed.
