From time to time people will wonder aloud about the involvement of the LDS church in this or that business enterprise. Just for the record, the church does not own any grocery stores, or car dealerships or any other retail establishment. They used to, back in the ZCMI days. They own Deseret Industries. They own real estate, and they have plenty of investment instruments, whcih may or may not include owning stock in some retail firms. But they do not outright own any of them.Certainly lots of those are owned by people who claim membership in the church, but that's different.

The church owns several businesses through its holding company, Deseret Management. Among them are Bonneville International, which in turn owns some subsidiary companies; Deseret Book; Hawaii Reserves; and Utah Property Management, which I think also owns some companies or at least some big assets.

As for retail, Deseret Book and the newspaper are definitely retail. I think the radio stations owned by a subsidiary of Bonneville may count as retail, too; and some of the holdings of the real estate companies are apartment buildings and possibly the mall.

Only the current and former presiding bishops know for sure.

Remember there are vast overseas opportunities too.

--Real estate. Besides vast holdings all over the world, LDS, Inc owns many apartment buildings near temples, and in major cities. Virtually all the couples missionaries I have known, had to pay rent and live in a church-owned apartment building. Temple presidents, temple workers, temple builders and repairers, etc., all pay rent to LDS, inc. Crummy apartments, at a marked-up rent. Some senior missionaries wanted to live better, less over-priced places, but the cult said no. There are several apartment buildings behind temple square in SLC, which the church rents to LDS students. Plus, all those temple-view posh apartments in City Creek.

--I don't know into what category the various "hunting preserves" would fall into. How about the entire city of Laie, and its profit-making Polynesian Cultural Center, which charges admission, but is staffed by volunteers and more of those couples missionaries I was talking about.

--Education is big business, and BYU, BYU-I, the school in Virginia, the school in St. George bring in profits.

--Amalgamated Sugar (U&I) is owned by LDS, Inc. They supply sugar for Coca Cola Co., and Pepsico, and Anhauser Busch (Budweiser) before Germany bought out Busch. Maybe they still do. I don't know.

--Of course, everyone knows that the Mormon church owns the largest beef ranch in Florida, largest in Utah, and also the second largest in all of Canada. They own large cattle ranches in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and all over the US.

--LDS, Inc. owns Meat brokering firms, I don't know the names, to broker meat to McDonald's, Burger King.

--Utah Construction Co. My uncle was high up in that company, but it has changed names several times since. Other construction companies are owned by GA family members, and there has always been great suspicion regarding bids, etc. After all, How could GBH be so far off in his announced cost of building that mall--off by a couple of billion dollars?
