BYU - Don't call it the "Big Mac"?

Was at BYU when they built the Marriott Activities Center. Shortly after completion those in charge came out and publicly told us "Don't call it the Big Mac"!

Reason was that the Marriott Corp owned restaurants and McDonalds was a competitor. Referring to a McDonalds hamburger was a slight on Marriott.

Naturally that cemented Big Mac for many of us.

"Those in charge" telling me what not to say would have motivated me to say exactly what they don't want. :)

Oh, and relating Marriott and McDonald's is a slight on McDonald's. And that's saying something.

Isn't that one of the reasons BYU changed the official name just to the Marriott Center? We were young marrieds living in Wymount Terrace when this whole thing happened. We actually thought it was kinda funny.

When the "MAC" opened, Marriott's holdings included the "Big Boy" franchise.

I think it is more likely McDonalds complained about the misuse of their trademarked product name
