If you don't want to read the article....

Students of color started a new club called Women of Color. The university is 82% white and often time those students feel like they don't fit in.

BYU -I had a similar club and the university shut it down, as they didn't see any value. And they didn't see it as a space for connecting with others.

BYU I spokesman said:

These are young adults,” Crandall said. “I don’t think they need the university to provide that for them. They know how to make friends and find people that they have [things] in common with — there’s a lot of apps for that.”

Another morning when I regret having the word "BYU" on my college diploma.

From what I can tell (as someone who has never been involved in the BYU system), BYU-I prides itself on being a lot weirder than Provo. Mormons seem to think that more rules = more faithfulness, so Idaho seems all too eager to heap on the pointless rules.

If I were a member of the example Mexican Cultural Association and the so-called University shut it down, I would be thinking there is something really messed up -- and racist -- about that.

The article makes great points about having a place to share cultural heritage and such. The Univ where I work has a number of these and it helps those students, particularly new students, get acclimated and for those from abroad, perhaps a little less homesick. They can more easily find friends with whom to celebrate national holidays6, their local dishes, and such.

Whaddaya mean, "find friends..."

I'm sure the White people in Charge (WPIC) are certain that all the Mexicans already know each other, so a social club is redundant.

Made me laugh.

I think it makes total sense. "“These are young adults,” Crandall said. “I don’t think they need the university to provide that for them. They know how to make friends and find people that they have [things] in common with — there’s a lot of apps for that.”

Yes, and I'm pretty sure they're going to take it even one step further and disband all LDSSA groups on campuses throughout the country. I mean, why should LDS students at Stanford need an association to provide them with social outlets and encourage them to group together and wall themselves off. They know how to make friends and find people that they have things in common with--you know like raging hormones, interest in American frontier history, needs to relax from the stress of school, etc. They need to find people outside their normal social group who they can talk to about these things.

And just the ticket--there are apps. They should just put a bunch of random things that they have an interest in together in a google search and see what and who comes up. For example, google: "mormonism" "space aliens" "Mr. Rogers" "Bear River" "Panera Bread" "Christ" "Vegas" "pornography" "IKEA" "Star Wars" "Native Americans" etc., and voila! They end up on a sight that has it all, "exmormon.org/phorum/read." There are lots of people who would be cool friends. They have a million different interests. They are people who will talk about mormonism with them since their LDSSA buddies are no longer around. That's EXACTLY why they don't need to group with others who are like them. They need to expand their horizons. Good Thinking Mr. Crandall. You are truly inspired.

It's a two way situation.

Way back when I switched jobs from one federal agency to another, I was just starting to learn the new agency's methods and procedures as well as learning my new job.

Someone from HR approached me to be coordinator/spoke-person for an ethnic group I'm part. The work amounted to about 10% of my time and it was to meet and work with people of my heritage to discuss problems and look for solutions.

I asked if it was to prep this group to be able to be qualified and competitive for promotions and better jobs.

The answer was maybe, but it was more important to make them feel part of the organization.

I turned down the offer.

Humans start lying before the concept even exists as a template in their minds... I wonder if cynicism, a form of lying, also exists as a natural condition?

No.

Cynicism is no more natural than irony.

Forming a club based on skin color sounds racist.

Or does that only apply to whites?

Mexicans come in all colors. The nickname "Chino" is in use because they also come in different in different ethnicities.

You know, sort of like all the different people who have piled on to what used to be the home of Native Americans.
