I finally shut the conversation down. He couldn't ever follow a straight line of thought but he was very good at hurling arrogant insults ( I stayed respectful).

His excuse for JS marrying other men's wives, mothers and daughters, sisters, and at least one 14 year old? Non-mormons killed many of the Mormon men because they didn't consider them Christians. So polygamy was needed. !!

I kind of feel sorry for this kid, spending many hours a day with limited internet access trying to find people to convert.

He sounds like an uninformed, brainwashed nitwit.

Why would you put yourself through this?

Is he your kid and you're trying to save him?

Yes they needed to take care of widows. And we all know that the
ONLY way to take care of widows is to coerce teen-age girls into
secret illegal "marriages."

"Ya gotta let me screw you, Flora Ann, otherwise the widow
Johnson, down the street, may starve to death."

[edit:]
When anyone brings up the "they did it to take care of widows"
baloney I tell them about my grandmother and grandfather. He
was a happily married 34-year-old man with a wife and children.
She was a 17-year-old daughter of a high councilman. The High
council approached my grandfather and told him he needed to
start living "the principle." He told them he was happy with
one wife. They told him too bad. He told them he didn't know
of anyone. One of the High Councilmen said, "I have a
daughter."

So my 17-year-old grandmother was married off in a "arranged
marriage" (not a legal marriage, or course) to an already-
married man twice her age.

And my grandmother's life story tells about how she had to work
all her life to support herself and her children.

So --

(1) it wasn't about widows, it was about teenage girls.

and

(2) they WEREN'T taken care of.

That must surely explain why Joseph married other men's wives. Also young teenagers in an age when the average age of first marriage for women was 23. Plus, if you do the research, the ratio between men and women on the frontier was always roughly equal.
