I hope someone remembers what that was all about, and informs the rest of us. Thanks.

The "Hosanna shout". It's done for temple dedications.

I did the white hanky thingy when I went to the dedication of the Provo temple waaaay back when. But, I don't remember what the Hosanna Shout was supposed to signify. It seems quite silly now.

In every other context, it's a sign of surrender.

Come to think of it, it's a sign of surrender in this context, too...

"We surrender! We'll follow the profit, no matter what! We'll give you 10% of our income so you don't threaten us with not being with our families in your made-up celestial kingdom! We won't accept gay people! We'll do whatever you say, we give up!"

It didn’t work out so well for the Fancher party.

Is that some ritual I haven't heard of? When do they wave a white handkerchief?

It's part of a temple dedication ceremony, but it was also done at the dedication of the conference centre.

That is the most bizarre thing I have seen in a long time.. I barely have words..I thought it was fake/satire at first.. How do any of these people stand there and do this with a straight face!?? How can they not see how idiotic this is??

I'm so baffled I can't even laugh!

I took part in 2 of these events, both times feeling really stupid. I think a lot of others felt the same, there was no enthusiasm and it was very lame.

I can imagine!! I'd be so embarressed!! And it's not like it's an enthousiastic cry of joy or anything!?? That would make it a little bit less creepy I suppose.. you know if people would actually shout Hosanna!! in joy and happiness..

but this.. the mormon church even sucks the happiness out of a happy cheer!

Just when you think you've seen it all..

To dedicate themselves to a goal or to feel closer to God in tough times.

I felt pretty silly doing the hanky wave.

I went to one dedication where ushers had stacks of interlocking white paper towels from some restroom, and were handing them out to those who forgot to bring white handkerchiefs. I testify to you that it looks even more stupid for people to do the hosanna shout using a paper towel.

On another related note, Mormons do the hosanna shout with the same enthusiasm they have when singing a sacrament hymn.

When I seen this for the first time, I was appalled thinking it was some sort of sick joke. But, the brethren weren't laughing. Nary a smirk amongst them. If I was in charge, this silly ritual would be forgotten and never mentioned again.

Encountered a version of this during a "come to Jesus/travelling evangelist speaker" at a United Methodist church a decade or so ago. Warm summer evening, indoors in an otherwise "normal" church. Very odd: paper tissues (think Kleenex or Puffs) were distributed. Audience got all riled up and waved with vigor.

Ridiculous.

I know people who carefully wrap up that hankie after a temple dedication and they have it in a keepsake box, like it's now a sacred hankie. They'll carefully unwrap it with great reverence and show it to you.

We waved the white hankies one time and I thought it was one of the most bizarre things we had ever done, except for the whole temple experience prior to 1990. Like Hie said, it's more a symbol of surrender. When my husband was growing up in his country of birth, the people were under a military rule for a number of years. People were told what to eat, and what meat or fish was allowed for that week. There was a 10 pm curfew and if you were unlucky enough to be out after 10 pm, you had better have a white flag to carry around; otherwise, you would be shot on the spot by the MP's, questions asked later if you lived. My husband said the white flag meant " I surrender", "Don't shoot",or " I'm not a terrorist". Sometimes, the white flag didn't mean protection at all,as Babyloncansuckit said about the Fancher Party.
