Maybe this dude should take this to the Antiques Roadshow for an estimate by experts who can better assess the value. Lots of factors such as prominence would be at play. I think I'll write the seller back and tell him to donate it to ChurchCo who undoubtedly would take it with open arms and promises of blessings in this life as well as the next. Maybe ChurchCo could take this in lieu of tithing for the rest of his life?

He seems to think he has a singular 'survivor' handcart. Who knows for sure?

Did Mark Hofmann build it?

Same seller is selling mule colts for $8,001,200.

Guess if someone is rich and foolish enough to pay that, go for it.

The mule colt can help pull the handcart ! That or the jackass he's selling for $2,500.

I'm guessing you meant provenance.

Either way I can't wait to see the history of briggy's torture machines come to prominence.

There's a pioneer wagon in the third picture behind the hand cart.

Wonder how much he wants for that?

Even if I were an LDS artifact collector, I'd want an expert in woods to examine that very carefully. Kathleen's quip about Mark Hoffman is cute ;-) but also apropos.

I'm also skeptical of the claim it's the "only one left."

There are historic village/s in Utah and Idaho/WY/MT with just such artifacts. I doubt it's the only one.

Guess what I have out in our barn?

A cart that looks exactly like that.

You know what it is?

A U.S. Navy garbage cart from WW II.

And it's in great shape.

I paid $325 for it.

How does he know no one else has one? If it is indeed authentic, a lot of people have antiques older than that, especially if everyone had one then, there’s probably a lot still out there in various conditions. There are probably a lot in abandoned sheds around those states , out in the woods somewhere.
Greedy, asking for that.

No work involved, but, no multi-level Ponzi either!

I like the donate/Get Out of Tithing suggestion - proposal!

Can't say I blame the seller, but were all genuine handcarts made from same species? I haven't seen that evidence.

I wish there was either-both a folksong and/or snappy cliche for this!

The middle picture is a dead giveaway that this is fake. There is no dish in the spokes. Notice how they are at right angles from the axle?

Chauncey Webb didn't build handcarts in 1856. He returned from his British mission in 1856 in the George D. Grant wagon company and after arriving in Salt Lake, went back out and participated in the handcart rescue. The advertising claim that he built this handcart in 1856 is pure bullshit.

You beat me to it.
Chauncey is one of my ancestors. He couldn't have built this in the timeframe given.
