I hated Girl Scouts and Brownies when I was a kid (in the late 50's). All I wanted was to be a Cub Scout and then a Boy Scout, because they had way cooler uniforms and did much more fun things.
I thought GS/Brownies were beyond lame, but was forced to participate for a few years. The only thing I learned of value was to step on a log rather than over it, in case a rattler is hiding beneath. The den mothers wanted us to learn cooking and fashion skills and I just loathed it. I wanted to play football with the boys and wear those way nicer uniforms.
Anyway, this was in the South, and all completely verboten for girls. The neighborhood mothers were sure I would turn out to be a lesbian because of my proclivities, but I didn't, and who cares anyway?
More power to the girls who want to be "real" Scouts, and not be relegated to some chintzy pale wannabe group like the Girl Scouts used to be. They probably have gotten better, so I really don't want to cast serious aspersions.
Anyway, it amuses me that somehow the LDS could almost tolerate gays being admitted, probably because some of them are likely closeted themselves, and more than a little fascinated by it. But girls? Nah, a bridge too far.
I love the first picture in this article:
