They’ve tried this shit before with “the Church of Jesus Christ.” The problem is that the news media and everyone else didn’t call them that. To say they are the church of Jesus Christ is a claim many Christian denominations make. For the news folks, that would be confusing. For everyone else, they’re MORMONS, pure and simple.
Besides, didn’t the Lord reveal the name of his church in the D&C?

exactly "the church" has always referred particularly to the Catholic Church. Which is the mother church of all Christianity. Mormons really think they are the center of the universe.

I don’t think it’s lost on anyone that they’re embarrassed about the Mormon name. It’s just funny that Nelson is raising a stink. Of all the things TSCC could do to improve its image, he chose this empty gesture. Par for the course.

THE problem for THE (MORmON) church is that THE $hit sandwich still basically tastes THE same, which is what you were really getting at.
A clumsy attempt at rebranding. Not the well thought out, planned, coordinated campaign that Edelman would do. So probably Nelson's idea. And will probably come to nothing.
How Nelson got it into his head, is an interesting question. Perhaps the Lord impressed upon his mind the importance of doing something about declining membership and troubled finances.
It's easy for me to imagine Wendy bugging him to do something noteworthy so that she could stand with him in the limelight.
Certainly, he has not demonstrated any propensity for receiving 'impressions' from ghawd. I put him waaaaaaay behind such a propensity compared to some of our own board members.
Only problem with ALL of this fussing over the name is that Jesus didn’t start a church, of ANY KIND!! His followers did, long after his death. The whole thing is sooooo stupid.
It should be called: “The Restored Church That The Followers of Jesus Started After HE Died”
