Regarding the Islamist/jihadist/Wahhabi/Saudi connection, here's a short but insightful article on how the Islamist-fundamentalist element took root in the Saudi Kingdom, and the how & why it became internationalist. It goes back to 1979 and the radicals' attack on the Grand Mosque in Mecca and Khomenei's Shiite take-over of Iran.
Especially notable is the sentence, "(T)he Saudi government strove to expunge the siege from public memory and to channel the energies of its more hostile citizens to crises afflicting the Islamic world beyond its borders, such as the war in Afghanistan" (and the West).

It's early to prognosticate, but I'm encouraged by Crown Prince Salaam's efforts to tilt the Kingdom away from Wahhabi fundamentalist and towards a more secular culture. We shall see.
