I know it might seem pedantic and silly for the Church to put so much emphasis on the name change, but at the end of the day, doesn't it come down to respect? I don't agree with the Church, but I respect its members are their right to be called by the proper name.

To me, this is like calling a black person "Black" or "African-American" instead of outdated terms or the n-word.

The word Mormon is not derogatory, so your analogy fails

It does come down to respect. But the church doesn't deserve any.

They can call themselves anything they want and I can't stop them At the same time, I can call them anything I want and they can't stop me. I will call them mormons.

Your analogy to African Americans is a poor one. Race is an immutable characteristic. We should not use derogatory terms for people based on theur immutable charaxteristics. Each human, regardless of race, deserves respect simply for being who she is. But, religion is not like race. Churches come and go and membership in a church comes and goes. It's just branding. Joseph Smith made up the mormon church. It deserves no more respect than any other tall tale created by con man.

I don't owe the mormon church anything. I especially don't owe it any respect.

If the membership were petitioning the leadership to authorize the change, I'd be in agreement with you.

But this change is being foisted on the membership, 99% of whom were certainly content being mormons, as in "My name is Ferdinand the Bull, I am out to stud, and I'M A MORMON!!!!"

I certainly don't recall hearing of anyone refusing to contribute to that now lamented program because they didn't like to be called a mormon.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints? Fat chance. I don't think they meant us, anyway. If we started meeting their expectations, they'd have to find some other group to demonize.

A "black" person may be an AA, or simply an A!

The "members" have no choice/ voice/ say in the matter. Like ANYTHING LDS, they (precedent on down) are telling the members one thing and the world another. Why else would there be both a lds and mormon web portal? TSCC hasn't gotten rid of moron.org (yet).

As to your reference and comparison to a people who don't want to be called - or call someone - ["n-word"] something [grassroots change] and a cumbersome authoritarian membership cult-society playing games with the public [and bigger games with it's members], theses are not the same thing. One is a people. The other is a regiment, a program, a teaching, a practice, a belief system, a habit, a society, a way, a game, association or even a necessity.

You may have more thoughts on the name change, but rest assured it's been going on, and will still, for a while. Nothing new. Politics [at the top, which is really the bottom, if you ask me. Someone asked. A lot of people did.]. Chess [with the members, without even telling them its a game]. Why? It's a game, and a racket [and I don't even play tennis, RACKETball, or badmitten, much]. It's part of TMC's long term goals. Maybe it's hockey. I'm not a junkie. I'm just a pockey, mon.

Play on-

I don't see that comparison the same way.

The Mormon name change is about branding. They had a crappy brand and they want a do-over. They want a brand change so people don't think about their history.

When race names change, it doesn't seem like they are attempting to disassociate from their past.

The people deserve respect. Their religions don't.

Yes, it's rebranding. And it's clumsy; not the well planned, coordinated, operation that Edelman would have done.

The vast majority have no idea it happened.

It will have no effect on public perception.

It may be troubling for those inside, as no convincing reason has been provided.

The MORMON church had no problem calling black men “sons of Cain.”

This is destined to fail...the word Mormon permeates the language so completely. Rename the Mormon Trail? Rename Mormon Tea? Rename Recover From Mormonism? Rename the Book of Mormon? And on and on...

I mean, it IS 'The Book of MORMON', so I'm not sure the analogy to race really works.... it is literally what sets them apart and is a central tenet to their faith.

Your analogy is atrocious. The members weren't clamoring to be called "members of the CJCLDS" a few months ago. They were perfectly content to be called "Mormon" until Russ pulled that particular wild hair out of his ass. TBMs care about the name change only because they're being *told* to care. It's an assignment, like toilet cleaning.

This name change is one old man's pet peeve that he's been stewing over since Hinckley slapped him down at GC in 1990. That's all it is. Were it not for their Pavlovian cult indoctrination to obey at all hazards, regular mormons wouldn't give a rat's butt.

Try again.

There’s a restaurant in Ogden that serves Mormon Muffins. They’re pretty good too. But I don’t think I’ll ever order another. I’m not going to sit there with a menu in my hand and order chicken Alfredo and a church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints muffin.
But if I order a Mormon Muffin Satan wins lol. And Nelson has an evil face.. it’s scary.

I'm liking this! IMO, the re-branding attempt will go over about as well as New Coke.

I will have fun calling them "Mormons" and watching them cringe!

If they try to correct me, or criticize me for using that forbidden word, I'll just say, "What."

"I'm not a Mormon, so I'm not up-to-date with all the changes."

No amount of rebranding can help the mormon church outrun its past. When the church faces its past wrong-doings and truly changes its ways, they might become worthy of some respect. Until that day, they get no respect as a religion.

This is where you guys might be wrong...

In the past, it's been POLICY and a SUGGESTION.

Now... its an OFFICIAL COMMANDMENT from the prophet himself.

This might actually stick.

For me... I'm going to take extreme delight in the years to come to call them MORMONS and watch them shriek in horror!

There are way too many historical sites named after Mormons/Mormonism. Are they going to rename all of those?? I live in California near Mormon Emigrant Trail, and a place called Mormon Island (the site sits under Folsom Lake and remnants can be seen when the lake is really low). There are several streets around here with the name Mormon in them as well. The MORMONS around here are proud of their MORMON history and all these historical places pertaining to pioneers and the Mormon Battalion, etc.

I can't wait to be in the presence of my TBM family and see what they do when I refer to something as Mormon. Will they freak out and act offended? Will they correct me? As with all things MORMON, this is absurd. Quit trying to polish a turd.

So I know this might come across as a little harsh. But that is an ignorant comment. Mormon isn't anything like that.
