I'd like to clear up a common misunderstanding when it comes to Jesus' full name.

Although you often see it written as "Jesus H. Christ," his actual middle initial was "A." The misunderstanding stems from the fact that his middle name was "Aitch." People hear "Jesus Aitch Christ," and assume it's "Jesus H. Christ."

Aitch was a very common middle name in first century Judea for the first born child, if that child was male (if the first born was female, the middle name was often Aitchia).

And all this time I thought "H" was for Hyrum, or maybe Horace.

Yeah, in my mind I picture Christmas cards addressed to Mary and Joseph Christ and family.

People started sending Christmas cards for the first Christmas, right?

As further evidence of how common the name was, my uncle is fond of saying "Judas Aitch Priest".

However I doubt there is any biblical or BoM evidence for his other favorite saying, "Jesus Aitch Christ on rollerskates."

We can thank Ms. Gabaldon for "Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ".
Kind of like that one.

No. The H stands for Harold.

"Our Father, who art in heaven, Harold be thy name..."

Besides, it has that Mo ring, doesn't it? The "holy initial"? For example, Gordon B. Hinckley, David O. MacKay, Bruce R. McConkie, Jesus H. Christ...

Yeah, without a middle initial, Jesus couldn’t even be a general authority, much less the savior of the world.

Jesus had no middle or last name. The only people with last names in his time were members of the elite upper-class.

Christ is not a last name. It is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word, Messiah, which means "anointed one." So Jesus Christ literally means "Jesus the Messiah," or "Jesus the anointed one."

Jesus was not born to Joseph and Mary Christ!

Since the name Jesus was a common one in his time, he was further identified by calling him "Jesus of Nazareth," indicating the town where he was from. (Some New Testament scholars believe he was also probably born in Nazareth, rather than in Bethlehem.)

I learned in Mormon seminary that Jesus had no last name. I also learned that being light minded was sinful. I'm guilty of being light minded with loud laughter. It's just heck being happy.

Jesus may not have been a carpenter, either. Somewhere recently I read that his profession was indicated by a word (in Aramaic?) best translated as "builder" - and by implication, "builder in stone".

Per some reputable historian of the period I read some time ago, Joseph was what today would be called a building contractor, with business not only in itty-bitty Nazareth, but all around the Sea of Galilee, which was a resort area for wealthy Romans and possibly some non-Romans. Lots of stone and adobe work, with carpentry trim. Not enough trees in those parts for many wooden houses, and the other materials are cooler in hot weather anyhow. Joseph also did contracting/building in several other areas, and had quite a business going. Not exactly Sanford and Son.

I distinctly recall a young man once blessing the sacrament.

“O god the eternal father, we ask thee in the name of thy son, Jesus H. Christ.....”

To this day I am guessing he still doesn’t know why they made him repeat the blessing, but the rest of us do.
