We used to get these nasty (and I mean nasty) burps from time to time. They were so bad they almost made you throw up.

In our mission we called them the "purple burbs."

I've heard that in another mission they called them the "sulfur burps."

What the hell caused them? I've never found out.

Giardiasis?

Look it up, see if it fits.

I see that now. It fits except that I don't remember any actually vomiting or diarrhea. Not that we didn't have them at other times.

But it make sense.

Thanks.

Amoebic dysentery ran rampant through Argentina when I was there.
There I checked the spelling

"Dysentery runs?"

I hope that was intentional, TDR!

Intestinal fartitude.

You've either got it or you don't.

I have vague memories of 50 years ago, being in the training mission part in Provo and hearing dire stories about missionaries getting sick in Brasil. I don't remember if there were specific illnesses that were prevalent.

I had a companionion in Campinas who was very sick (and I felt sort of deserved his illness) who ended up in the hospital in São Paulo but recovered after a couple of weeks.

But that's about the only time I remember memorable illness in my years there.

Sounds like giardia to me. Those sulfer burps are awful.

My nephew posted a picture of him and his fellow mishie mate in S. America. His partner had lost 50lbs due to an identified infection. All puffed up and proud because he hadn't sought medical attention and was still walking the beat. Sick! The Holy Ghost was guiding and protecting that poor lad I think not!

This happened to a guy in my ward. He went to Sao Paulo and became ill. He lost a lot of weight and came back to the states for hospitalization. He finished his mission stateside. I think he is still suffering with ulcers and other intestinal problems to this day.

He was in the central mountains, somewhere in Central America. He had some kind of parasite that consumed everything before DH could digest it. He lost about 60 lbs. He was given some herbal tea by the mission president's wife and told sternly not to let his parents know.

His comp became so concerned that he talked DH into letting him take a picture - just for old times' sake, and the memories, you know. When he got the picture developed, the comp sent a copy of it to DH's parents. My late MIL told me about it. She said that DH looked like a scarecrow in the suit he was wearing. She promptly ripped the MP a new one, got DH sent to a proper hospital in a coastal city, and made sure he was certified parasite-free by an English-speaking M.D.

MIL wasn't somebody you'd care to cross, if you had any sense. She was also a jack-Mo, so she couldn't be intimidated by a bishop back home.

I got something that gave me nasty burps and farts at the same time. The whole town got it, so it may have been water borne.
