I must be recovering because it doesn’t seem as much a cause for celebration. Getting rid of one tyrant only means he will be replaced by a worse one. Still, there’s the sport of the thing.

I must be fully recovered because I don't know what you are talking about.

Or was it that guy who enjoyed a "beer at Mooessers"?

Or was it that financial genius who established one of Kirtland's finest financial institutions?

150-year anniversary is called a sesquincentennial. 200 years is a bicentennial. So what is 175 years?

The bicentennial pre-party.

Dodransbicentennial.

Basically means two centuries, minus a quarter century.

Is this the only person in history who was:

Locked up on serious criminal charges.
Died in a gunfight.
Now revered as a martyr?

Hmmm. I guess I should take a deep breath and recognize I'm on a recovery from mormonism website, but celebrating ANYONE being brutally murdered by a mob just hits me wrong. I don't like it.

Have you ever heard a parent say something along the lines of "If that had been my child, I would have killed that bastard!"?

Then you think about your kids and you nodded your head, "Yeah, touch my kids and you die!"

Heat of the moment stuff...

Comment on this one:

"Ken Rex McElroy (June 1, 1934 – July 10, 1981) was a resident of Skidmore, Nodaway County, Missouri. Known as "the town bully", his unsolved killing became the focus of international attention. Over the course of his life, McElroy was accused of dozens of felonies, including assault, child molestation, statutory rape, arson, hog and cattle rustling, and burglary.

"In all, he was indicted 21 times but escaped conviction each time, except for the last. In 1981, McElroy was convicted of shooting and seriously injuring the town's 70-year-old grocer, Ernest "Bo" Bowenkamp, the previous year.

"McElroy successfully appealed the conviction and was released on bond, after which he engaged in an ongoing harassment campaign against Bowenkamp and others who were sympathetic to Bowenkamp, including the town's Church of Christ minister. He appeared in a local bar, the D&G Tavern, armed with an M1 Garand rifle and bayonet, and later threatened to kill Bowenkamp.

The next day, McElroy was shot to death in broad daylight as he sat with his wife Trena in his pickup truck on Skidmore's main street. He was struck by bullets from at least two different firearms, in front of a crowd of people estimated as between 30 and 46.

"To date, no one has been charged in connection with McElroy's death."

Interesting, huh?

yes interesting. Ken was probably unloved and unmourned, although his poor wife might have a shed a tear or two. Hard to be too sympathetic, but can be sad for him (in a theoretical sort of way).

Having had a look at Skidmore, MO, on Google Maps I feel a bit sad for the whole damn place...

Murdered, yes, and I think we should call it that. He never had a fair trial and due process. It was an ugly incident.

Joey, Parley Pratt, BY, & a few select others did better as MoLeaders than they probably would have done otherwise; more sex, more $, devoted followers; (can we imagine Joe as a Farmer? Not Me!)

Not so bad after all, life expectancy wasn't all that great in those days anyway; Penicillin wasn't discovered/invented until 1928, surgery was mostly brutal. No radiation or other effective treatment for cancer, etc.
