Sorry about Fearless Leader(™) calling y'all national security threats. A tip of the hat to nightingale, our most quintessentially Canadian poster. And Jordan, our least quintessential Canadian. I see a Molson ad in his future. ;)

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee

Thank you. Gonna drink in (literally) some craft brewed Canadianess today, go to a community BBQ with all my neighbors and tomorrow head west to enjoy me some Rocky Mountain Majesty!

Thanks for thinking of us! It's a glorious weather day here on the West Coast. Sun, salmon BBQ, splashy water parks, a few suds (beer), and the obligatory pipers and parades. I'm a spectator this year, staying home, but sporadically watching all the celebrations on TV. People look happy and relaxed, enjoying the national party.

Here are all the words to our anthem, English language version (the 2nd verse, the one that switches to French, is my favourite - I don't like to see it cut out. "The True North" is reminiscent of the battle cry in our recent NBA championship):

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

---

There you go. Short, sweet, and the tune a bit bland. But the sentiments are fine and the country great. We're working on making that truer and better for all.

I've missed the parades but maybe will get out to the beach before sundown. It's a fun day.

Will do, LR. Here's hoping!

Qualicum Beach/Vancouver Island - great location. Hope your time there goes well.

Too bad, just a little too far for me to be on hand to buy you a pint of local draft beer. Maybe sometime. We Canucks have to stick together!

I will be back to the west coast sometime for a more leisurely excursion...would love to raise a pint with you. I've got a pal from Ricks up near Sechelt I'd live to visit.

Sechelt is lovely. Sounds like you're choosing the good places to visit. I've spent many weekends over there. Best blackberries ever.

Right - a pint it is. Just ask CZ for my email when you're headed this way. I'm big on the Granville Island lager this year. Goes so well with the fresh halibut we've been enjoying. And with just about everything else too. Sunshine, a pint, and a bag of chips (fries). The perfect summer!

FWIW, there are reportedly six restaurants and a food truck in SLC that have poutine on the menu. For the uninitiated, that's french fries and cheese curds drenched in gravy. Heart attack on a plate.

Louis Riel's Revenge.

When a friend came here from San Francisco to run the marathon a few years ago he was so excited to try poutine. He didn't manage to eat more than a few bites and never ordered it again. I've never had it myself. Not all that appealing. They sure love it in Quebec though.

We love Canada. Lovely people and lovely country. We’ve only been to the Maritimes. We’re going to Quebec in the Fall, when kids are back in school. We see Quebec license plates, whenever we go somewhere. We’re only 2 hours from the border. They have great fish and chips. My husband loves the Doner kebabs .
They’re called donairs there.
He got addicted to them when he went to Turkey and when he was stationed in England. You can’t find them here, but Canada has them.We were walking around Halifax and his nose picked up the scent.
Everywhere we went, the people were friendly. I had an hour and half long conversation with the guys working in a sporting goods store at a mall in Nova Scotia, about hockey.
We still lived in NC then , near Raleigh.
We were telling them how no one really was into hockey there, even though the Hurricanes are based there.
We were telling them how you can get seats right behind the glass for cheap. Of course, the Hurricanes got in the playoffs this year, so fair weather “ fans” filled up the seats then.
We want to see Calgary and Lake Louise on the Western part too.
My husband has distant relatives in Quebec ( don’t know which city) and some in Winnipeg. His mother’s maiden name is French.

Nobody's ever called me 'quintessential' before. I like it!

Thanks for the post - very nice.

And yeah, I'm quite happy with this land my dad chose for us when he wanted to leave the UK. We're so lucky there was a good choice available and we've loved it here. Missed the family though - all back in England still so we didn't get to see much of them through the years. I especially miss the time I didn't get with my grandparents. I only know them mostly through stories from my parents. I saw them last in my 20s and then they left us. I wish I could remember my maternal gm singing. Mom is always saying what a glorious voice she had. And what a great seamstress my paternal gm was. I didn't know that about her either. My aunts used to knit my older sister and I little girl cardigans so we would keep looking English, lol. When we grew too big for them I put them on my teddy bears. Tenuous connections but we know there was love there. And to get in a vaguely mo reference - nobody expected anything of us but what we chose for ourselves. Amazingly satisfying way to do life. Not selfish, or sinful, just everybody playing to their strengths. There are worse ways to conduct oneself.

Hope you all have a fabulous July 4. We sure enjoyed our 1st.
