There was a short quake of 5.4, presumably a strong aftershock, also centered near Ridgecrest. I had just nodded off; it woke both my dog and me, but the rest of the family slept through it. It activated my neighbor's alarm.

Strawberry Short Quake!

Alas, there was no quake for me...

That is a strong after shock.

It must not be near a high density population zone?

I hope everyone is doing OK.

It is nerve-frazzling anticipating aftershocks. I was living in Northridge when the Northridge quake hit there several years ago. I will never forget how frightening it was. Our house had some damage.

I hope you, Tevai, and all our other So. Cal posters will be safe. I hope that this quake relieved any pressure and that maybe there won't ever be a "big one."

Now I live close enough to Yellowstone that I will probably be the first one vaporized if/when the super volcano erupts. I just moved from an area where I narrowly missed two tornadoes. I'm telling ya. Earth isn't safe!

Thanks for the good thoughts, dagny.

I was asleep and didn't feel it, so this is a good thing! :)

I'm hoping the people more directly affected, who are dealing with the aftermath of the original quake, are doing okay.

I read that their hospital had to be evacuated, and that there is substantial structural damage to those nearer the epicenter.

I hope all of them make it through okay.

No doubt there will need to be a lot of safety inspections to be done. I especially worry about gas lines and water lines. They can take time to detect damage and can be very dangerous.

Pets might be frightened too. Fireworks were bad enough for many of them.

Be safe everyone.

Hi Dagny!

1. felt the July 4th 6.4, but thought it was a local 3-4 quake.

2. Slept through the early Friday aftershock.

3. Felt the 7.1 for about 20 seconds on Friday evening.

Down here in south OC, shaking was only mild.

Nice to "see" you PtLoma.
I'm glad it didn't impact your area very much.
Scary.
I hope you are doing well!

I realize my earthquake will come soon enough.

Good luck to everyone dealing with aftershocks this week. Stay strong.

Cheryl, were you in SF or the Bay Area for the Loma Prieta quake in '89?

Living in a place you are told is a major quake waiting to happen is as stupid as living along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers in known major flood zones.

Is it as dumb as having children whom you know are doomed to fall down and skin their knees? ...and who will one day die?

Aren't the Missouri and Mississippi the same river like the Logan and the Bear?

The Missouri meets the Mississippi and the Mississippi drains into the Gulf of Mexico. The Missouri is 2341 miles long from its start to where it meets the Mississippi. The Mississippi is 2348 to where it drains into the Gulf of Mexico.

Whether earthquakes or flooding, if you live in areas where they are known to happen and don't have your own insurance - taxpayers should not bail you out. You live there, you assume the risk.

It was a joke, an allusion to someone who thought that tributaries are the same as the main river even if both have distinct names.

Ya gotta understand, 1 2 3 4, people are SOOOO resistant to belittling themselves!

You'd think that the art of belittlement was a bad thing! But since it comes from ghawd (All things come from ghawd, even the devil), so oughtn't we take advantage of ALL his generous gifts?

I'm on Vancouver Island and there was one overnight northwest of here too.near Haidagui but we felt nothing. Different failt zone than the California quake.

I'm envious. My present location is nice, but yours is better.

I still remember the one before the World Series. More people would of been hurt if there was no game. I think the bridge had less traffic than it normally would of had.
I remember the one we had when we were living in Virginia. We were visiting my husband’s parents in NJ at the time.
We heard loud thumping that we thought was from the dumpster behind our hotel room , down below.
We heard later on the news that it was part of an earthquake , close to Virginia. When we got back home in VA, we just had a deep , long crack on the wall going downstairs and the window panel popped out of the fireplace. No major damage. My parents in NC felt it faintly, but they thought it was just maneuvers from the nearby military base

I was five and felt that one. We had just returned to the mainland from Hawaii and were visiting friends in Gilroy, CA, which wasn't very far from the epicenter. That one was wild.

This one went on forever. It scared my son and my dog , but my daughter thought it was a hoot and was disappointed when it finally stopped. Wife is a bit like my daughter. She worries about those closer to the epicenter but finds natural phenomena pretty interesting.

I checked the backyard. Quite a lot of water was sloshed out of the pool. Our poolhouse was originally at ground level, but we had it rebuilt and elevated a year after we moved in, and reinforced the base and stripped doors and windows as well. I'm glad we did that, as I have the Steinway parlour grand that I inherited from my grandma out there.

If we lived on my income alone (actually we pay our bills and put money into savings with my salary but there's no mortgage and the estate covers the taxes), we would not be living so well. I get a few perks from my mom's side of the family, but mostly our lifestyle is due to the fact that wife's father invented a few obstetrical instruments and sold the rights to them at most fortuitous times.

I remember after the Northridge quake, our pool water sloshed out. The water level in the pool went down a foot. The chimney cracked away from the house and cinderblock fences had sections that fell over. This was in Porter Ranch back when it was new.

It's amazing people were able to put videos on Twitter so fast right after it happened. It lasted long enough for them to grab their phone and still have several seconds showing the motion. With cameras everywhere nowadays we can see a lot more what was happening.

I hope the damage to infrastructure and buildings is minimal. Be safe everyone.

We weren't especially close to the epicenter so I'm not sure any footage we might have caught would have been all that impressive, though all the rattling seemed pretty dramatic at the time. When it was going on, however, the last thing either my wife or I were concerned with was capturing the event on video. Children and pets took priority (we had my in-laws' dog and cat along with our own dog), though one of our children seemed to think it was some sort of an amusement park ride.

That reminds me of something some guy comically said on Twitter along the lines of:

"I ran to save the TV in the room instead of my pregnant wife. We are having that discussion now."

I remember I was getting ready for early Seminary when the Northridge one hit. My parents were still in bed calling me. I was trying to get through a hallway to get to them. I kept falling against the hall walls. My dad, bless his heart, started praying. Go figure.

Your priorities are were benevolent!
