Wow. Russian bots operating with "clout" 30 years ago?
Boy, that was even before the inception of the World Wide Web in 1990. I'm astounded to learn that the Russians had bots operating through an internet for which there were not even browsers to influence the opinions of people who didn't even have browsers. My heavens, that was some deep conspiracy right there.

He spoke of "clout," 30 years ago. Different government, different leadership and agendae. He didn't specify internet clout. Russia has long been willing to meddle in American elections, by any available means at any given time.
Sometime this year, I saw a picture of a Russian warship in port in Syria--a gesture of support for Assad. Various naval brass were on deck, posing and talking. Quite visible in the photo was the skirting on a gun turret, eaten away by rust, but generously covered with battleship gray paint.
