"Shunning" is the word we usually use for the snubbing behavior of cult members, such as the Mormons and the Amish. Shunning is Mormon SOP, and almost all of us ex-Mormons have experienced it.
"Marginalize" is a less drastic behavior. They don't exclude you from everything, but they act weird, keep secrets from you, don't include you in most conversations, and leave you out of the loop for most of the activities and especially the cult activities.
Some of my TBM extended family members treat me like dirt--I often use the term "rude."
I'm sure you have been "ghosted," when Mormons just disappear from your life, and, likewise treat you like you don't exist.
What do we call it when we, the ex-Mormons, decide to put Mormons out of our life? Maybe "moving on."
Estranged is too much a couple thing as in pre-divorce. Shunning is good but the problem with the word shun is it even sounds religious like some kind of rite. "I shun thee in the name of Jesus!"
I like Scorned and Eschewed when the word shunning just won't do. Give it to me full on---not this namby pamby shunning stuff. Ratchet it up!
I’m wondering what word to use to describe this: Family excludes me from vacations, facebook posts and ignores anything I share on whatsapp family chat (UNLESS it involves a promising guy they hope I will marry), and try to get my daughter involved in church behind my back. At the same time, they act hurt when I don’t completely accommodate their plans to visit me last minute, tell me honestly and sincerely that they love me, my mother offers to lend me money, and they tell me how proud they are of me for training as a nurse. Confusing, no? What word describes all of that...
Immaturity? Shallowness? This is the Lukewarm situation that the supposed Jesus talked about that he would spit out. One thing whoever wrote that got right. Give me hot. Give me cold. But enough with the tepid already!
They have no idea what unconditional love is and aren't even adept at using conditional love-- though they try. Their church does not teach them how to deal with someone who doesn't follow the church's rules. They are lost and their precious HG is silent.
I think what is really happening is they are "stringing you along" as a salve to soothe their own guilty actions. They know what they are doing is wrong. Has to hurt LJ12. This pathetic behavior could go on forever unless the situation is forced to change. I feel for you.
Perhaps send them that Jesus quote from the Bible and ask them what's with the Lukewarm?
Not a Mormon snub, but I had just experienced a major estrangement from a sibling after traveling over 2K miles to visit and this sibling wants nothing to do with me.
