IIRC he announced 8 new temples back in April, now we got another 8.

In his closing remarks at the General Women's Session of the 189th Semiannual General Conference, President Nelson announced plans to construct eight new temples. Four outside of the U.S., four in the U.S.:

Freetown Sierra Leone
Port Moresby Papua New Guinea
Bacolod Philippines
Cobán Guatemala Temple

The U.S. temples include:

Bentonville Arkansas (home of Walmart, in the far NW part of the state bordering Missouri and Oklahoma)

McAllen Texas Temple (in the far south of the state, near Brownsville and the Mexican border)

Orem Utah Temple (between Provo & American Fork)
Taylorsville Utah (about halfway between W. Jordan and SLC)

With these two additional Wasatch Front temples, there will be 16 temples between Brigham City in the north and Payson in the south (inclusive.)

These bring the tallies up to a whopping 166 Dedicated temples, 14 Under Construction, 37 Announced, for a total of 217.

At last!!! Been whispering in these bozos' ears forever, one finally got the message.

Provo was just TOO FAR to go for Me to show up (not that I'm lazy or anything). Now I have my very own place. Afterlife is good.

LDS.inc is about money. Why are they building more temples? Don't they loose money on that? Why not open up an lds beauty school that stay at home moms could attend?

https://www.campusexplorer.com/college-advice-tips/B19D0BEC/Colleges-with-Mormon-Affiliations/

My guess is they could make more money offenring trade schools than building more temples especially in Utah.

Instead of building a Jesus mall why not have an lds plumbing school or lds carpenter school?

By teaching the members how to fish could bring the church overall more money. Time spend on on learning a new trade that could turn into a business ( open own hair salon or rent a chair). Versus time spend trying to do a salvation for an already deiced person. Utah has a high foreclosure rate and how is added temples helping with that? Members have a high suicide rate and a high zoloft rate. Why not help members instead of building more temples? I know I have resigned over 6 years ago but this is so very upsetting to me. Lds inc should invest in its members instead of building temples. OK I am done with my rant for now.

You must have been a great Mormon. You seem overly concerned about what other people do, critical, and pedantic. Why the impulse to correct?

The Temple is the one thing guaranteed to keep the money flowing into the kauffers.

If you you cant pay then you cant obey and play.

No money equals no status in the Mo church. No status no temple weddings etc.

Ask your selves how many Mos' do you know that are the most dishonest ly'n cheata'n sons 'a bitches. Yet get to go to "Temple".

The pay there for they get to play.

The more temples the tighter the grip for obedience.

Background: The church has always had convert baptisms because of the flow of immigrants to the area. Temple assignment consisted of Dallas, then San Antonio. If members preferred an all Spanish speaking temple, then Monterrey, Nuevo Leon was a 3 hour drive.

The elephant: Many church members that live in South Texas have residency problems. Some have entered the US legally on a VISA and have stayed after it expired. It's possible to stay out of trouble and live under the radar of law enforcement. The church does not ask if members are legal residents. People can travel a range of 150 miles (Laredo-McAllen-Brownsville) without passing through an immigration checkpoint.

The addition of this temple will allow members to attend without passing through immigration checkpoints.

Especially when they have a TR. And if it's OK to disobey this law, which other laws can they ignore?

My husband was a Scoutmaster in a ward in Texas. He wanted to go camping to a camp close to a border when he found out that many of his Scout were illegals in the USA. So he camped within 1 hour to 2 hours away from the ward building to stay away from trouble.

Port Moresby? It's a crime-ridden hellhole. You can bet there'll be no $20K rugs or $100K chandeliers there. How many temples need to be surrounded with barbed wire?

From the UK govt's website:

"Serious crime is particularly high in [PNG's] capital, Port Moresby, and in the cities of Lae and Mt Hagen. Settlement or squatter areas of towns and cities are particularly dangerous. 'Bush knives' (machetes) and firearms are often used in assaults and thefts. Carjacking, assault (including sexual assaults), bag snatching and robberies are common. Banks and cash machines are attractive targets for criminals. Walking after dark is particularly dangerous in Port Moresby and other urban centres.

"Known high-risk crime areas include the area around Parliament House in the Port Moresby suburb of Waigani, particularly outside of working hours, and along the highway between Lae and Nadzab Airport. Criminals use roadblocks outside towns to stop and loot vehicles and then attack the occupants. If you intend to travel in these areas, take great care and consider using a security escort.

"Outbreaks of tribal fighting are common across Papua New Guinea, especially in Port Moresby…"

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/papua-new-guinea/safety-and-security

WTF are these people thinking? Sending off a naïve, trusting older couple from Mt. Pleasant or Panguitch to officiate as veil workers is a tragedy waiting to happen.

Yup. The church is no stranger to putting it’s members in harms way.

These kind of temples are window dressing. The Rome temple is a showpiece. All to give an illusion that the church is worldwide and growing.

All to keep the people who pay most the tithing in the US inspired o pay tithing.

They just built one in Port-au-Prince

Most all the third-world temples have tall walls around them and cameras

I think I predicted a PNG temple on this very forum. Poverty cuts both ways - it stops citizens entering other countries. PNG passports are probably very weak.

However - what if the church is playing the long game? Not all poor countries stay poor forever. PNG and Haiti are both basket cases right now, but the church also has property in Ghana and Malaysia where values have gone up in some places. Other places which have gone up in value after political stability are Rwanda and Montenegro, both of which have had money pour in after wars in the 1990s.

Orem? Orem has never been glamorous. Maybe this will finally put it on the map.

Maybe put it omn the bench just west of the mouth of Provo Canyon?

Hard to imagine any other Orem spots being fancy enough for a temple.. And it will be hard to compete, style-wise with the Provo flying saucer and Provo tabernacle temples... both are among the most dramatic temples in the fleet. Besides SLC and Provo x2 all the others are all pretty hum drum.

Same for Taylorsville. Not the most glamorous locale in the Salt Lake Valley.

It’s nice, though, that they’re not shying away from low-brow areas.

They built the Boise temple right next to a interstate highway interchange. The Jordan River temple isn’t exactly in a prestigious area.

All these temples are going to give the members temple burnout. Once the temple becomes a chore and nothing special there’s nothing in the church for anyone. That’s where it’s headed. There isn’t going to be anything uplifting or worthwhile in the church.

Taylorsville, Magna, Kearns and West Valley City are not only less than glamorous, but are also areas where the Church has been in steady decline as evidenced by the closure of many units in the area. Perhaps the real purpose of a Taylorsville temple is to stop the apparent bleeding.

And once again, Raymond Alberta gets screwed over!! Booo Friggin' Hoo!....a little history lesson here.....Raymond campaigned to be the site of the first Canadian temple (and first outside of the USA) and named the large sandy hill north of town "Temple Hill" in anticipation. I imagine they never forgave the Poobahs in SLC for building in Cardston.

Wow, that's a hell of a snub.

There's a lovely motorcycle track so I think the community won after all.

Between the draws of Wal-Mart and Branson, Missouri, the Ozarks region has, in the past 30 years, turned into an unlikely destination for members of TSCC. For sure this region now clearly has the highest concentration of Mormons in Arkansas, much more so than Little Rock.

Also, the Church in 2018 moved the mission headquarters in the region from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Bentonville.

What a colossal waste of money. Just think, the $1 billion dollars could be used to help people avoid bankruptcy because they pay too much tithing, etc. Any surplus could be given back to the members, like some major corporations do when they have a surplus. Honestly, the LDS church needs and deserves to be federally investigated for their crimes. I seriously hope this is the start of their downfall.

The several times I have been to the Bentonville-Rogers-Bella Vista area, it all seemed very evangelical, holy-roller Christian [Christ of the Ozarks statue, passion play, even the Precious Moments chapel a short drive away]...or the typical Lutheran-Methodist-Presbyterian old-school churches for the elderly residents who fled from snowier climates.

I hope they do not plan to convert anyone to attend their new NW Arkansas temple. There will be no interest from any direction.

If Jesus came back he would have to kick the money changers out of these temples for them to be acceptable.

Temples provide I believe many opportunities for money to change Mormon hands.

OK, I'll admit that I'm old, but still...when I was on my mission, there were only 16 LDS temples in the entire world--now there are half that many announced at a single semi-annual conference.

Do the sheep still think temples are "speshul"?

Oh, yes, very much so. They may not go more than a handful of times a year but they are their holiness to their lords house of handshakes to heaven.

Good luck getting the Baptists and Evangelicals to go for Mormonism in a big way. Maybe Bednar wants people to believe there was a mass conversion while he worked at the university there.

Or maybe it's because he kept his home in Bentonville and doesn't want a long drive when he visits the old homestead and gathers his family around for holidays.

It probably has more to do with Bednar believing land values in that area are going up and the board of directors thinks it's a great real estate investment site. Yeah, that's far more likely.

As I point out above, TSCC has actually grown fairly substantially in the Ozarks, but only because of members moving in from the west, thanks to Wal-Mart and Branson. I don't think there is or has been any expectation of huge numbers of converts there.
