I've been binge-watching The Handmaid's Tale. It looks like a dystopian society that would appeal to some hard-core evangelists. I keep looking for parallels with Mormonism, like the comment that the handmaids must always go out in pairs in order to watch and report on each other (like the LDS Corp missionaries) rather than for safety, as they're told. I'm surprised the don't call each other 'brother' and 'sister.'

Praise be...

Under his eye...

If you haven't already you really really really need to read the book :)

I have, and didn't rate it at all. The present is more Joanna Russ than Margaret Atwood.

I read it for the first time about 2 years ago. I thought it was excellent.
Talked with a friend in the English Department at my school about it.
He put it in perspective to the time written. Talked about it in relation to the then failing Equal Rights Amendment.

I read it a few years ago and found it very depressing. The show is compelling, and Atwood's sequel seems to be written more for those who watch the show.

I read the original short story she steps from.

Most of what Margaret Atwood writes is depressing..JMHO...and listening to her speak isn't much better.

I have tried to read Margaret Atwood on and off over the years, and have never succeeded in getting through a single book. I’ve always felt a little un-Canadian for not being a fan, although they’re probably not going to revoke my citizenship over it...hopefully!

Having said that, since the Handmaid’s Tale has been on tv, I’ve been thinking of giving that book another try. Maybe this time it will click.

I haven't seen the movie or watched the TV series...by choice...and the fact she gets treated like a near deity by the Canadian media is annoying.
