Rachel Carson wrote "Silent Spring" to expose risks of using DDT. There was an aggressive pushback from industry and government.

'Those inconvenienced by the truths Carson exposed immediately attacked her for her indictment against elected officials’ and corporations’ deliberate deafness to fact. They used every means at their disposal - a propaganda campaign designed to discredit her, litigious bullying of her publisher, and the most frequent accusation of all: that of being a woman. Former Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson, who would later become Prophet of the Mormon Church, asked: "Why a spinster with no children was so concerned about genetics?" He didn’t hesitate to offer his own theory: because she was a Communist. '

This was new to me.

Mormon propaganda would suggest that this spinster was one of the many widows that Monson would regularly minister to.

It appears that he was seeing her only through his Mormon lens of marital and child-bearing status. He didn't think very much of women, did he?

Millennials would think guys before the boomers were from a different planet. Fortunately, the church will continue to be led by anachronistic dinosaurs.

Time to see women as whole without a man and retire that word except for when used on Mormon leaders.

The word Spinster should be reserved for Mormon apologists and Rusty and Dallin and that Bednar guy who really know how to spin.

What this illustrates to me is that humans in the past have really lived in two different worlds. There are the Married and the Singles, we cross paths everyday, we say hi to each other, but really don't understand each others lives, struggles, fears. It's especially problematic for marrieds to be in complete control of religion, it completely alienates Singles from feeling welcome.

There is a whole sociological discussion that could delve into this complex topic.
