I find the best heavy-duty hand treatment is plain petroleum jelly--slather it on your hands thickly before bed and put on cotton gloves overnight to help speed results. You can find cotton gloves for this pharmacies and on Amazon, etc. Search for "moisturzing cotton gloves" or "eczema gloves."
I agree that nothing works like Vaseline and that is what I have been using but it takes a long time to soak in for during the day. I remember using Bag Balm for Diaper rash. I may be able to get some at the farm store in town. Anyone use O'Keeffe's working hands?

I had a bad case of dry skin on my shins. Dermatologist determined it was just dry skin and recommended some rather expensive creams, they didn't work.
On a whim I started using Bag Balm and it worked. Tried O'Keeffes, it wasn't as good but was better on my hands and face.
I'm completely sold on these two products.
You can get the Bag Balm in the pharmacy at Costco, best price over Wal-Mart.
You could try also the Bert's Bees hand salve or their miracle salve. Those products are as good as the Bag Balm. Both are products (I believe O'Keefe's, too) used on the farm and also among weightlifters who tear their hands apart all the time.
I use petroleum jelly. It's cheap and the bottle lasts for years. My job is really hard on the skin and my fingers because of a climate controlled room (0% humidity). So sometimes I have to apply it multiple times a day, and also if I'm doing cement construction at home I apply it every a lot.
I have the driest skin on the planet or at least in the running for the title. My heels get cracked an bleeding easily.
I swear by Gold bond foot cream if you can find it--for hands and elbow too--although I can't find it lately. But I buy the Gold Bond hand cream and it is heavy duty as well and works wonders on my heels.
If you keep the dead skin on your feet to a minimum, you will have a lot less cracking and bleeding. I recommend using a callus remover and use it after you shower and your skin is hydrated. It will save you a lot of pain and suffering.
Look for Shea Butter as the only or main ingredient in a cream/tub. The Dr I worked for always recommended this to patients with severely cracked skin.
If it gets that bad I use UDDERBALM..it workes good on nasty spots and is antiseptic too. We always had a container of it in the vet cabinet for our livestock and one in the house for us 2 legged critters!

My dermatologist recommended CeraVe moisturizing cream and explained it keeps natural lipid layers on the skin to heal all kinds of conditions. I've used it for years for eczema and its really great.
