Even when they’re wrong. So said Oaks.

What if the leaders are incompetent? Good leaders want to be criticized. They don’t want to be surrounded by “yes men”. But the church isn’t led by good leaders. It’s defective by design.

They speak for God, because they receive direct revelation from God. That means that any criticism of the brethren is really a criticism of God himself.

The words from the leaders paint a picture of a God who can't make up his mind, and is constantly contradicting himself, but we still can't criticize.

Oh, and of course there are rare (actually countless) examples of church leaders being indisputably wrong, but that's when they were speaking as men. We're still forbidden to criticize.

"They speak for God, because they receive direct revelation from God."

==Is that what these LDS mormons are claiming? That they are prophets? That they are getting their ideas from a god?

Yes, that's the cornerstone of their 'religion'.

It's the authoritarian mindset -- both for leaders and followers.

"Don't question the leaders" is usually the first rule of authoritarianism.

Mormonism's twist is that you should follow leaders even when you know they're wrong, because you won't be responsible when things go wrong, you'll be rewarded in the afterlife, and the bad leader will be punished a bit (but because he's in the leadership caste he'll probably still end up with greater rewards than the followers, because the second rule of authoritarianism is that leaders are always superior to followers, that's why they're leaders).

That’s “Dear Leader” to you.

Asking questions is not criticism no matter how many times the brethren claim it is.

Then they are not leaders, but rulers. The Divine Right of Kings is alive and well in the Mormon church. Their empire building is by divine decree. It’s good to be King.

The fact that mormons are not allowed to ask questions ( I guess because it equates to criticism of leaders) is the thing that first set alarm bells ringing for me as a mormon. Since this big red flag led me out of the church I wonder why it succeeds in shutting so many other mormons down as its meant to??
