FWIW here goes...

"Out on the road today
I saw a deadhead sticker on a cadillac
A little voice inside my head said:
"Don't look back, you can never look back"
I thought I knew what love was
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go"

From: "The Boys of Summer" - Don Henley

Or so it seems to me...

Zac Brown Band
"Quiet Your Mind"

I hear the waves
Sun beatin' down on my shoulders
It's a near-perfect day
Wishin' I wouldn't get any older
They say that it's gone 'fore you know it now

Quiet your mind
Soak it all in
It's a game you can't win
Enjoy the ride

I feel the change
Goin' on all around me
It's strange
How I'm taken and guided
Where I end up right where I'm needed to be

Quiet your mind
Soak it all in
It's a game you can't win
Enjoy the ride

At the end of the water
A red sun is risin'
And the stars are all goin' away
And if you're too busy talkin'
You're not busy listenin'
To hear what the land has to say

Quiet your mind

I hear the waves
Sun beatin' down on my shoulders
It's a near-perfect day
Wishin' I wouldn't get any older
They say that it's gone 'fore you know it and
Soak it all in
It's a game you can't win
Enjoy the ride

Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on"

Or backwards

"Here’s to my sweet Satan
There was little path
[Which] would make me sad
Whose power is Satan
He’ll give those with him

You know what? satan isn't real, so even if it does say that when played backwards, what does it matter? If Jimmy was into imaginary satan, how is that any different than a rocker that believes in jesus and works it into a song?

There are those who think that life
Has nothing left to chance
With a host of holy horrors
To direct our aimless dance

A planet of playthings
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
“The stars aren’t aligned –
Or the gods are malign”
Blame is better to give than receive

You can choose a ready guide
In some celestial voice
If you choose not to decide
You still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears
And kindness that can kill
I will choose a path that’s clear
I will choose free will.

There are those who think that
They were dealt a losing hand
The cards were stacked against them
They weren’t born in Lotus-Land.

All pre-ordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate
Kicked in the face
You can’t pray for a place
In Heaven’s unearthly estate

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt
That’s far too fleet…

They are an underrated jam band. They're know for "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong". Crap songs. Their good shit will never get radio play outside of a midnight college DJ just chilling.

"Shinbone Alley/Hard to Exist" - one song segues into the other - jam band like ;-)

moonlight through the chicken wire
humming window pane
lukewarm water gasping
down a rusty drain

big towns in need of mending
street lights make toothsome seams
denim shadows shuffle
in between the beams

different strokes for
different folks oh
mind your manners
easy on the ethnic jokes

s'a [it's a] dumbbell curve
you're tryin to tally
all the way down
shinbone alley

streets are metacarpals
with flesh of asphalt [I don't know what this word is]
buildings rise
like fingers
from a concrete palm

yellow-lit apartment
trickle through the drapes
windows frame each history
hidden even from the fire escapes

sullen winter sparrow
lends wing to expanse of grey
six-thirty-two in the morning
on Thanksgivings day

and the bums
they hit their corners
the thunderbird rubs their bones
the crack addicts stare
at the snowflakes
zigzagging
down
to greet their jones

different strokes for different folks so...

seven-oh-two on the same day
your bare feet sweep the parquet
the light's
so papery white
shining past the microwave

knuckles to eyeballs
elbows on the table
spend the day
gazing from
the window gable

different strokes for different folks so...

[jamming jamming jamming - serious jamming - long time jamming - I want to play the drums jamming - they jammin']

"Hard to Exist"

You know how I tend to feel when
nothin's hap-nin
Like some bigoldbirdsofat that he just can't fly
Far be it for me
to be over reactin'
My body hurts like hell
and all I can do
is wonder why

Like a man in prison
I'm occupied with busting out
I'm in no position
Say what are these walking blues about?

Hey Mary come play with me
please forget your lessons
Pete's off with Captain Hook and with cutlasses they play

I got a feeling you and me will get along fine
Down on the beach
in the fresh air
with a jug of wine

Like a man in prison
I'm occupied with busting out
I'm in no position
said what are these walking blues about?

Oh yeah
I claim to be infected
Oh yeah
point me in the right direction
The situation's got the best of me
I gotta go on
You know I gotta be strong
But it's hard to exist

The pyjama people are boring me to pieces
Feel like I am wasting my time
They all got flannel up 'n down 'em
A little trap-door back aroun' 'em
An' some cozy little footies on their mind

Po-jama people
Po-jama people, people
They sure do make you sleepy
With the things they might say
Po-jama people
Po-jama people, people

And seven, seven n-n-n-n-no tomorrow
And eight, eight, I forget what 8 was for
But nine, nine, nine for a lost god
And ten, ten, Ten, TEN for everything, everything, everything, everything!

"Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Ruined a Whole Generation of Women" by Negative XP

BPD and Ecstasy,
conceited with low self-esteem
She's a teenage dream if you hate yourself
Bright dyed hair and obnoxious clothes
Thinks communism is the way to go...
Fluoride mind and SSRIs
A thousand-yard stare for all those guys...

[Chorus]
She saw Ramona Flowers
And felt so empowered
By a movie made in Hollywood
It's sad to think she's someone's daughter
Like a lamb to the slaughter
But honestly I'd still hit if I could

I like the [title of the] song 'This Is America' by Childish Gambino: but then watching the video... It's always good to watch the video.

I like a few. I'll think of them. Probably

Strangers in the night
Two lonely people, we were strangers in the night
Up to the moment when we said our first hello, little did we know
Love was just a glance away, a warm embracing dance away and

Ever since that night we've been together
Lovers at first sight, in love forever
It turned out so right for strangers in the night

Sam Sparro, Black and Gold

If the fish swam out of the ocean
And grew legs and they started walking
And the apes climbed down from the trees
And grew tall and they started talking
And the stars fell out of the sky
And my tears rolled into the ocean
And now I'm looking for a reason why
You even set my world into motion

'Cause if you're not really here
Then the stars don't even matter
Now I'm filled to the top with fear
That it's all just a bunch of matter
'Cause if you're not really here
Then I don't wanna be either
I wanna be next to you
Black and gold, black and gold, black and gold

[...]

This is an old favourite from my running playlist. I can’t help thinking of RfM and all the Science/Darwin/Evolution discussions over the years when it comes up. And about love...

"For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
Forget about your sin
Give the audience a grin
Enjoy it!
It's your last chance, anyhow!

So, always look on the bright side of death
*Whistling*
Just before you draw your terminal breath
*Whistling*

Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke
It's true!
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh
Is on you

And

Always look on the bright side of life
*Whistling*
Always look on the bright side of life
*Whistling*"

-"Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" as performed by the cast of "Monty Python's Life of Brian."

I was a lumpy, shy, hopeless socially inept teen when this song came out, but I loved it.

I eventually lost a bunch of weight, grew out long, shiny hair, moved away from home and didn't have to behave like the socially inept wallflower I had always been.

I loved to apply makeup to highlight those "Pretty Blue Eyes," and felt myself turning into a different personality.

To give you a clue of what my home life had been like, the first time (in college) I was asked out for a date, my mother flatly didn't believe me. When the guy came to pick me up for the date, Mother behaved like the Gestapo. She wrote down the make, model and license plate of his car. She warned him (and this was not pleasant, because, as usual, she had been drinking and was more than a little buzzed)- if I was not home by eleven, she would call the police.

The guy was very pleasant, kind of dull, even (the relationship didn't last long).

A longtime friend had moved from our home in San Diego to UCLA, and she wrote to me, "Get yourself up here. It's far enough away that the parents can't be such nuisances." She sent me an application packet.

I was accepted at UCLA, and a whole new life opened up there.

I would advise any young person looking for a university that if you can afford it, go to an "away" university where you won't have the parents breathing down your neck all the time. It is SO worth it.
